So my nephew bought a 4 runner a while back with a VR v6 engine in it but the sump was cracked and leaking bad, we replaced it with a much better conversion sump and new pick up from V6 conversions. All good, about 6 months later the oil pump started getting noisy and having problems priming oil.

The oil pressure was erratic, sometimes fine, other times low, often ok at idle but dropped to 0 when revving. Figured the engine was toast which it was, consumed a ton of oil and fuel well before the oil pressure problem.


Anyway, found a low k reco engine for 750 bucks, started to do the sump swap and pick up. Found the conversion oil pick up was blocked with something.


Picked some of it out and turned out to be newspaper or something? There was nothing in the new sump or pick up when we installed it, I checked it all out to make sure it was clean and free of anything.

Absolutely no idea where it came from? Well that explains the problem.

Looks like a decomposing oil filter but how did it end up there?

Def not oil filter, it's exactly the consistency of newspaper. Started to try clean it out, found a lot of 3-4mm sized solid rocks of carbon deposits and few pieces of metal. Got 99% of it out but the last few small bits of carbon are lodged firmly in the corners of the shroud and mesh screen.

Currently soaking in degreaser to hopefully loosen it up so I can bash it on a block of wood and knock out the last of them.

If it's carbon an overnight soak in thinners should clean it out.

Ended up getting them out with the blow gun. Those bits of metal, found where they came from. The thrust face of No. 2 main bearing, completely munched up.

I suspect it's from all the drama he's had with the conversion clutch/bellhousing setup.
