What type of memcal chip is in a VS-II Commodore V6

Hey fellas,

I'm new to this site and i'm just wondering what the type of chip is that the memcal is. All I know is that it's a 32pin chip? that is of 1mbit of storage. I was wondering where you can get these programmable chips from and what the general cost would be?

Regards!
Jim.

Also, what is the programming/flashing voltage of one of these chips? are they 12.5 volts? also, these chips are 1 megabit? so are these a 128Kilobyte chip as 8 bits is equal to one byte.

Regards!

Welcome  The EPROM is a 27c010 and uses 12.5v.

Thanks for the welcome, VL400.

I'm interested in copying a VS memcal that I have. I found that I can get an 27c010 EPROM from my local electronics store, but they're $25 each. I found a supplier in HongKong that does an AMD brand one for like $2 each. They are the 1MBit chip with the 32pins and run on the 12.5V programming voltage so i'm hoping that they will be okay. Now my question is as follows:

I have a true USB willem programmer. one of the new GX models. Just wondering how I would be able to read all the data on the chip, save it and then write it to a blank EPROM? What software would be the easiest to use? and do blank EPROMS need to be erased before used or are they safe to just write new data to?

I'm new to this game of programming EPROMS and memcals, so your knowledge would be of great help for me.

Regards!

get the software from here:

http://www.mcumall.com/comersus/store/m ... wnload.asp

Ive not used that software, but it'll be a case of pick that you want to read a 27c010, then pick read, then save it.

To write you'll need a UV eraser, peel the sticker of the top of the chip. expose it to UV light from the eraser (dont look in to the light) for about 5 mins.. put it in the programmer and do a 'blank check'. if there is an error, stick it back in the eraser for another minute. Dont go more time in the eraser as you need as that'll wear out the chip quicker than you need to. Once it's blank then load the file you want to write and hit program.

Thats general, i havnt used the software but should give you an idea of the process.

see if you can find some 29c010s or something like that, much easier to use in the vs if you don't have RT stuff.

Hey antus. Do you think it'd read factory memcal's properly? and also what sort of UV light setup should I or could I use. Never had to obtain one of these before. I do remember some 15 years back when I was at college in electronics using a UV light "we called it a black light" which was basically like a fluroescent light but wasn't powdered. If i get one of these '"i don't know where from" would this do the job?

Cheers!
Jim.

something like this is what you want .... http://cgi.ebay.com.au/UV-EPROM-Eraser- ... 19bdf6e362

that said, if you get one of these: http://futurlec.com.au/price1.jsp?part_no=AT29C010

then you can electronically erase without needing any uv eraser!!

Damn fellas,

you're an absolute wealth of information. And many thanks for taking the time to write back to me. I'm certain it'll help this noob "lol" writing memcals and code real fast.

oh yes holden 202. That second link is for flash memory, kind of like for a computer bios how you can re flash them! That chip type would be practical to use.

Thanks again fellas!!!
