Tools for watching the Data bus

I see phrases along the lines of 'watching the data bus'.

In the case of PcmHammer, I assume that is between the Tool and Pcm??

What tool(s) are used to do this??

I think most people will be using an AVT cable to monitor the traffic.

I use a J2534 tool (MDI or VX Nano) to monitor all traffic externally.

So you have two tools hooked up, one to program with and one to monitor the traffic on the one used for programming??

Yes thats correct. Only need to do that when needing to debug weird issues happening.

Or educate ...

So just tie another connector into the existing connectors wires?

What software is used?

Thanks Tazzi

I use my own custom apps for it. This way it allows me to modify/add as I see fit.
For example, if I need to simulate certain frames into the bus or simulate an entire ecu to see how an application such as pcmhammer responds to specific responses.

Hi all,

Gampy, SOMEWHERE here on the board Antus has a packet sniffer.
Not too sure WHERE it is though.
Not sure if it requires an AVT cable either.

I believe that was using a DSLogic which is a logic analyser, along with an application called SigRok which Antus developed an addon to interpret the VPW signals to identify frames.

Not sure how long/sample size it allows with that.

Yeah thats right. The plugin only works with the dslogic. Its good for developing hardware interfaces because you get the timings as well as the protocol decode. I use the AVT interface which operates on a virtual serial port, then I use a serial port logger. The avt protocol is well documented and pretty straight forward, so thats easy to read. For the most past its just size headers. SUDT Access port is a good free serial logger that can handle 4k packets, but you need old version v1.35. Newer versions and the 64 bit version cant capture long packets. I did this in a 32 bit VM on my 64 bit OS with USB passthrough to the AVT.
