New to Ford ECU's

Hey guys,
I've never had much to do with Ford ECU's. Plenty to do with Delco's and a little bit with LS1 and later GM ECU's.
We have an old Patrol coming into work soon for a Barra engine conversion from BA/BF.
I know there's plenty of places we could go to have the PCM flashed and PATS deleted etc, but I figured this would be a good chance to get involved myself.
Are there any options other than expensive commercial software?
What hardware interface is required / recommend?
