De-Nissan-ised VL

Post by Jayme »

Hi, My Ride is a 1986 VL commodore.

it started out its life as a nissan 6 but a few owners ago, that was remedied. Under the bonnet now rests a VN 5L mated to a T700 auto.
Mods include Corvette Servo and other mysterious modifications to the gearbox (the result of which is a nice squeal if it hits 2nd with a few revs up), VT front discs and calipers, Walky LSD, Lowered.

Nice standard looking body keeps the cops away

under the hood. looks a bit naked without the engine covers, Im trying to work up the motivation to either polish or paint them. havent washed under there for a year or so, so its a little grubby.

The current state of my passenger floor. Ive been testing a few different bins lately and until I get a realtime kit, I cant be stuffed taking the ecu out every 5 minutes to reburn the memcal.

Also, one of the most common things I see being asked about this type of conversion is something like "how do I hook the speedo cable/VSS to the gearbox"

all I can say is this is what mine looks like.

So obviously the guy who wired it did a good job.he must of connected the vss feed for the ecu into the factory vl vss output from the dash.

Right you are, I just traced my VSS wire and it goes straight to Pin 8 on the VL dash (2 pulse output). wired like that, the standard VN value of 1250 pulses per kilometer is correct for the ECU too.

thats good to know.are you running a dash with rev counter at all or just speedo.if it has a rev counter is it a v8 dash to display the correct rpm or has it been modified

Pretty nice conversion. I have had a couple of VLs over the years, good cars... Even better running on delco! I never bothered touching the ECCS stuff in mine.

I went down to willowbank tonight, only got 2 runs in :( it was quie busy and there were a few crashes.
fastest run was running a bog standard kalmaker BBMP calibration, the slow run was after I applied my timing modifications at 100 kpa, couldnt beleive it was slower !!!
slips and youtube vids below, my car is on the right lane both times.

I like a sleeper or the old saying less is more.
I see the reaction time is were your time is and the track temp and humidity changed affecting tune.
If you can get .4 reaction or close to it then you would be in to the 14 second zone.

Here is a time card from the car I am working on.
Slow reaction time and old street slicks at test an tune.
The Heat, Car number is 3949.

just a slow commodore.
slow reaction time by the driver and it would be in the 10 second zone.
Don't make excuses. Make more horsepower.
