VX L67 Series 1 - PCM or Com Problems?

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the forums & tuning the Holden PCMs but have had some experience with a few aftermarket ECUs.
I've been trying to troubleshoot a problem with my car for a while now. The car has an intermittent misfire or stumble that happens at all loads & speeds. The ignition module died and was replaced but that was a symptom of another problem with the leads (also replaced). I have also replaced the AFM, sparkplugs, cam sensor and tested other sensors.
I thought I had trouble connecting to the ECU with the ALDL cable (from Envyousy Customs, tested working on a VX N/A 3.8 before) that I had because I was unsure if the tune had been previously modified. There was a plain MEMCAL and a MEMCAL with "HSV XU6 (Enhanced)" label on it. I tried a few adx files but still had the problem of the gauges displayed values jumping all over the place.
I bought an NVRAM module so I could do live tuning, thanks Gareth, and can connect but still have the same problem. This happens whether the engine is running or not.
The battery and alternator are good but the displayed voltage is all over the place.
I have read through the FAQs but didn't find an answer to this problem, unless I missed something.
Could this be a problem with the PCM? Or is it a problem with the wiring? Or just with me?
The numbers on the PCM are:
Service No. 16233396
3.8L Auto PCM
16269068
