Knock sensor swap
Knock sensor swap
So I've been looking into using the 2 wire flat response LS2\LS3 type sensors. So the wiring is the easy part. Comparing LS2 equipped P59 vehicles that we have xdfs for and comparing to other apps they both still show them as resonant type 1 wire.
So copy the tables from the LS2 pcms, wires them in and let it ride? What's everyone's thoughts?
Maybe if anyone is bored and has access to gtos and vettes wait to take a look? I did find some resonant type with m8 threads instead of the factory m10 and extension harness, but not sure about headers and clearance.

Re: Knock sensor swap
There are past threads about this being attempted. Someone who is way beyond my abilities at modifying code on these pcms gave up after many attempts and failing to get knock detection to work using 4th Gen sensors on 3rd Gen pcms. NSFW was still working on it last I can remember, maybe he'll chime in.
Also, I don't believe any ls2 used p59. They went to e40 for ls2 and e38 for ls3.

Re: Knock sensor swap
The earlier PCMs before this generation had audio filtering in hardware that was not programmable. The lack of progress and lack of factory applications to use this sensor makes me think it's likely that there is a hardware factor to this and its not possible. I cant say that for sure, but it seems more than likely.

Re: Knock sensor swap
I'm fairly certain an 05 GTO was still using p59. Also the 99-02 5.7 vortec vans had the ls2\ls3 style sensors. That is why I was looking for a bin the other day.Cincinnatus wrote:There are past threads about this being attempted. Re: Knock sensor swap
If you mean https://www.edmunds.com/pontiac/gto/2005/review/ that GTO, then no, that was the first E38 with can bus PCM which came with the engine change.
I don't know about the 99-02 vortec.

Re: Knock sensor swap
Antus, I'm fairly certain that ls2 used e40. The e40 uses CAN and vpw. The ls2 and lh6 were transition to gen4. They were still 24x but had gen4 knock sensors and cam sensor moved to timing cover. E40 was only used 05 corvette, 05-06 GTO & SSR, 05-06 trailblazer 5.3 and 6.0, 05-06 grand prix gtp with ls4, 06 monte ss and impala ss with ls4. According to info I have, some ls2 (06-07 corvette and maybe others) went to 58x. E40 only supports 24x I believe, if it's 58x it will be e38 or e67.

Re: Knock sensor swap
I have a pic of pcm info of models and years, but can't upload the image. I tried multiple times. Are images blocked?

What is the error? No images are not blocked. I have just tested an ok here. It could be a file format thing, eg if its the most modern HEIF format some phones use now which the forum doesn't support.
I wrote up a whole lot comparing G8 to VZ commodores, but now I have done more research and I see you got G8 in the form of the VE commodore from 2007. So I dont know what a 2005 G8 is. If it was our VZ commodore then it was a crossover model, and had both P59 LS1 and E38 LS2. But I don't know enough about the US market to go in to more detail.

Re: Knock sensor swap
I'll look into file format. A g8 is a North American commodore. The g8 wasn't introduced here until 2008. 05 and 06 was the transition with v8 cars using 24x but using e40 pcms. By 07 everything went 58x (cars and trucks) and e38 or e67 pcms. Trucks, suvs, and vans used p59 from 03 to 06.

Http error 500. Pcmhacking.net is unable to handle this request. It hangs for about 30 seconds and finally displays white page error. It's a jpg image. It's hangs when I click add the file button.
