They go by many names, P01, P59, VPW, '0411 etc. Also covering E38 and newer here.

You need to extract the zip folder first and than run from there. This error happens when you run the .exe within zip folder, or without the extra files needed.

Thanks mate. All sorted now. Someone from the patcher group posted your exact same answer

G'day all, been a while since i've had time to play with this again. Have just tried reading a mates ecu but i get the following error. Does that mean the ecu is locked by a tuner? Just trying to help a mate out removing vats for him so don't want to end up with a brick. Any ideas?

You have no communication with PCM. Something is wrong with setup, cable, or pcm is completely dead.

Can you select device as serial with com port and not as j2534 device.

As Tazzi has previously stated, try using the NATIVE OBDXPro, rather that the J2534 device.
Not too sure if he got the GT J2534 driver sorted yet.

you need to unzip universal patcher properly, cut and paste all the files in the zip in to a new folder. You just clicked the EXE and windows 'helpfully' extracts just that one file on its own, and its not running properly.
Have you read the FAQ? For lots of information and links to significant threads see here: http://pcmhacking.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1396

Yes i have done that.

What i have discovered is that it has probably had a tune in the past after talking to the owner and the software number on the ecu doesn't match the number that came up in LS droid so i'm guessing that it has been tuner locked. The O/S number that i got is 12202088
