Tried with the resistor at 1x speed and the behavior was identical to without at 1x speed.

Ok so! Doing some testing with Gampy's kernel.
The OBDX Pro GT and VX worked without a single issue for reading and writing.
The OBDX Pro VT required either:
1) Pulldown resistor on VPW line to ground to run stable at 4x
2) Running it at 1x without resistor or anything.
My personal verdict is the OBDX Pro VT should be hard coded to 1x for the P04's.
So ProfessWRX, your not going crazy, it certainly is happening with the OBDX Pro VT v3 that I have on my bench. Its due to it not applying a strong load (resistor to ground) whereas our newer tools do (As explained in my other post
)

I successfully did a clone write. Definitely need to 1x speed and it would be great if PCMHammer did this automatically as you said. That would save people like me from bricking a PCM!
