VS Ecotec transplant
VS Ecotec transplant
I'm helping a friend with a jet boat, we are using the vs v6 ecotec motor, It has bstk 1451 on the Eprom. It won't start theres spark as the ignitor runs that, theres power at all the corect pins on the ecu. There is fuel pressure, just no injector pulse Does the security thing with the BCM apply to this motor?
There is alot of things missing ie, the BCM, the auto i've head this stuffs up the idle due to no vss but it should still go ok ie no limp mode, the idle is going to be a bit off due to the jet unit anyway so we'll just open the throtle stop if we have to.
Also there is no o2 sensors as there was no pervision for them in the manifolds, these boats spend most of the time at over 3/4 throttle and well up in the rev's don't think it'll be doing alot of closed loop stuff so wasn't to woried about it... as long as it doesn't freek out and go limp mode.
perge valve is gone
Fuel pump relay is gone
Whats the cranking siginal needed for(ie will is start with out), looks like they use the brake warning light as a pull up on this input, and a relay to pull it back down when starting? I don't have this setup on this, but did try pulling it low and to 12v.
Is there a better bin i should be using to get rid of all the error codes? and the bcm if thats whats stopping us?
Any help would be great

Re: VS Ecotec transplant
youll definitely need to turn off VATS on the memcal before you will get injector pulse.. usually the bcm gets the key head signal and then gives the pcm the ok to start. with no bcm it wont start.
I dont think the idle will be a problem. with no VSS its only a problem if the engine gets held above idle by your momentum so the pcm closes off the idle solenoid thinking you are just idling too high, then the second you stop it stalls. I cant see a jet holding the engine revs up anyway so that wont be a problem.
you can bring the engine temp to enable closed loop up to 150 degrees, then it wont try to enable, then mask the error codes for oxygen sensor so then engine light stays off. you will also need to mask all the auto codes, OR what would be easier is just start off with a Manual bin like BSTJ.
either way to get it runnin right youll need a eprom burner to redo the memcal.
EDIT: here is a bin that should work. it has VATS disabled, BCM communication error code masked, and BLM Learning temp set to 150 deg. it will start and run but the enigne light will probably still light as the definition I used doesnt have the oxygen sensor codes in it to mask.

Re: VS Ecotec transplant
Wow thanks for that. Now got to look into an eprom burner... just spent about 15 hours getting a programmer and software going for AVR micro controllers working properly, hope the eprom burner is easier! Off to look for a circuit or ebay, we'll see. Thanks heaps for your help
Edit:
decided to get this

I just hope it gets here buy the end of the week, we want to take the boat away for new years!

Got a pc with a printer port still? The usb is for power only, so you need a real printer port for it to work properly.

Re: VS Ecotec transplant
And dont forget an eraser for the EPROM too, or grab some EEPROMs and convert the memcal (can be hard to find pin compatible EEPROMs though).
Re: VS Ecotec transplant
Yep i've still got a parallel port on my desktop at least, i'll just grab a new eprom just to be safe to start with, I have a uv light (fly zapper fluro that I use for photo pcb developing) or what about a uv led, i'll look at the data sheets of the eprom and see if it's the right wave length.
I tried using this xdf file https://pcmhacking.net/forums/viewtopi ... &t=5#p5588 to open the tune and other vs tunes and xdf files don't seem to have much luck tho get a huge list of things to tune on the left but they all seem to be 0 when you click on them.
Tryed a $5D bins and xdf and it works fine...
Is theres an article on the bin naming conventions ?
There seems to be a standard there but it's all a bit mind blowing when your on this steeper learning curve
Thanks guys this is great stuff !

Re: VS Ecotec transplant
Yeah thats the xdf to use. What bin are you opening? Are you using tunerpro 5?
uv erasers are cheap on ebay (< $20) but if what you have works on pcbs then it'll probably work. Just keep doing a blank check in the programmer every few mins until its erased. Too much UV wears them out sooner.

Re: VS Ecotec transplant
No i wasn't using 5 that fixed it thanks, can't wait for my eprom burner to turn up.

No matter what the question is, the answer is always more horsepower!
Just starting out? Have a read of the getting started guide

Haven't got any photos of that boat, there will be plenty after new years. But heres some pics of another mates boat i did an ecu for, this one is a toyota 1uzfe running megasquirt. Its a steel hull so it loves the punishment, We had a jam up in the steering...

The one with the vs is fiber glass so you have to be nice to it.
