So keep in mind that both the hydrolic systems have no fluid in them and that the stock one also must use a cooler and extra lines...
Im a little lost now, I like the electric column idea over the hydrolic option but not sure about durability, tuneability seems to be the same for both, less to go wrong with the column option? Power consumption seems to be similar according to stock cable sizes.

My holden cruze has electric steering, its awesome, light as a feather in carparks then goes heavier on the freeway etc to slow down twitchiness! .... I was a bit apprehensive when I first heard of electric power steering, but after 70,000kms I've got nothing negative to say about it.

From what I can work out they have an electric rack like the VF?... I reacon an LH drive rack flipped over to run rear of the crossmember could work also, but not keen on fucking with the steering geometery...

yeah I actually thought of that after I posted, the Cruze has a motor on the rack not in the column like your pics, but the mini I mentioned uses the column option which is the best option for fitting it in I reckon.

i would suggest the one you have now would be easiest and best option, rather than trying to put a different rack in the car.

Funny thing is I never knew there column type electric PS other than these kits for kombis from the UK.

Check out the steering system on the Barina,spark and trax,
The drive motor is on the steering column.
The steering shaft connects to basically a manual steering rack.
