355 ON METHANOL

Post by 2inil8 »

Hi guys after some info on running methanol with efi
just wondering if anyone has done it with efi and holden v8 and how it goes?
what injectors eg 60lb bosch 044?
i know it requires afr tables to be 6.4 ?
any help or pointers would be great.
comp is in the 12:5 region, come tunnel ram setup and 2 eldebrock 1000cfm throttle bodies
cam is cam tech solid 4000-7500 260 duration 109 deg lsa and 610/615 lift.
some other serious mods aswell,4 bolt mains and oil mods etc...
looking at using a fuel cell in the boot was told plastic is the go as alloy gets corrosion.

well i can't really tell you much about methanol in a 355 but i can tell you plenty about methanol in an injected 202 :D

the biggest issue you are going to have is getting everything to live with methanol.

eg. bloke i know races v6 sprintcars with methanol and they regular kill fuel pumps (044's) and they have some issues with injectors getting corrosion also.

having said that, i haven't yet had any issues with methanol in my gemini .... but i normally drain and flush it with petrol and run on petrol when not in race mode! (eg. in and out of the shed etc)

so as you suggested you need to change some stuff to methanol AFR's .... if you plan to use OSE12P code i can give you a copy of my methanol tune (actually i think its in the OSE custom tunes section already) that will give you all the tables that need to be converted to methanol AFR's .... also you need to offset injector cranking pulse widths to approx 2.3 times that of petrol ones to get it to work

personally i would recommend getting it roughly running ok on petrol (with bugger all timing) then work on the methanol tuning from there.

as far as injector size its hard to say, i have 80lbs in my 202 because i one way plan to boost it so i figured buy them once. but also if your 355 is going to make over 400-500hp you might need even bigger injectors.

plastic fuel cell is the way to go, i have done the same thing, i've also got an alloy surge tank and thus far haven't had any issues with corrosion.

judging by your rough description of your combo your probably looking at running around the 600-650hp mark

you need twice the flow for methanol

if you are looking at say 600hp on petrol 600hp div by 8 injectors =75hp

to make 75hp per cyl you need to divide that by 2 to get approx injector flow needed

75 div 2 =37.5lb/hr

so you would use 42 lb injectors if running high duty cycle or 50lb keeping duyt to 80% ish

for methanol you need to double the injector flow so to make 600hp on meth you would need 80-100lb/hr injectors

since your probably going to run over the 600hp mark id go the 100lb and a pair of 044s for safety

i just did a 383 stroker on E85 on msd 50lb injectors and it runs like a clock and pulls like a train

also if it was me id disconnect and disable the 02 sensor to save confusing things

will do with the 02 sensor.
what fuel lines are you running or what would you reccomend?

i plan to run on normal fuel and nulon pro just to move around like you said holden 202
my plan would be to flush and run it with normal fuel after using methanol
i looked into mechanical injection but its just brutal .
will check out your tune

would these injectors be up to the task for methanol ? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... 0501433188
just up the fuel pressure a bit more? i think any bigger are low impedance and need a driver box to
use the injectors.

also think maybe a fuel pump like this and run dash 10 line to the rail
instead of 2 bosch 044s.

Really need to either know what hp your chasing or find out from others with a similar setup what they make and go from there - TTVN would be pretty well on the money I reckon. We use 42lb inj on a 410cube motor with base pressure of 55psi, it hits 80% DC wih rwhp around the 450ish mark on ultimate98. Double the fuel flow for methanol and with similar HP, the 75lb inj are going to be too small. That pump is also only 600lb/hr so with methanol can halve those HP figures they quote.

my fuel lines which are not rubber hoses are alloy lines under the car, i went for 3/8 as im only a baby 202 :P but you can get them in half inch or 5/8 .... see here: http://www.mscn.com.au/scripts/prodView ... product=95

oh and for the record, you need 2.3 times the fuel in methanol!!
