P04 R&W Testing

They go by many names, P01, P59, VPW, '0411 etc. Also covering E38 and newer here.

I'll take that over some other names I've been called that's for sure!

I'm questioning if they are P04's ... I personally don't know!
Visually I would say not.

But if it's free (or basically), and you can physically connect to it, it speaks VPW, and if PCMHammer speaks with it ... Sure, why not!
But that's a lot of if's ...

That was enlightening. My normal go-to for parts info doesn't have the 04-05 L32 cars. But some secondary searches backed up what Zack said. They're 3 plug ECMs that look like E40s. The service part number for 2004 should be 19210733.

The older 96 L36 modules have similar plugs to the P04, but totally different cases and an access cover for an EEPROM. Example service PN for a 96 L36 F-body is 88963803.

Is it possible 512k is the only real variant of the P04?

I think that is right. Certainly the 256K and the 1M both look different. They're in that 'v6 bins' archive that's been shared, but that does not claim they're all P04, that says v6, which they are. So I think v6 and P04 have been used interchangeably and agree it looks like the P04 is 512K.

Was this Pxx / Exx nomenclature ever used in any GM parts or service documentation? I know the newer stuff has it cast into the case or printed on a label, but I'm not sure where the names for the older stuff came from.

Basically, I'm just wondering if there's some data source out there we can locate and mine for the correct number to name references.

I think it comes from ex-gm staff who were there and know the name. Ive only ever picked them up from forum posts and pre-existing software references. Never seen an official guide.

I have one of the 1mb PCMs listed in the spreadsheet (12588930) on its way. I'll see if I can connect to it when it arrives, I'll report back my progress.
I don't know if what I am providing here is accurate but I went down a Wild-Wild-Web rabbit-hole search and the following is what I was able to find...
- I saw a couple of references to the 1mb PCMs with the (3) connectors as being P05.
- I attached what I 'think' to be the correct pinout for the (3) connectors.

Looks like 1mb v6 is labelled as p05 with different versions a,b,c and so on.
It may be much more similar as flashing to p12, using p12 ram layout and registers.

Anyone have a vin for a p05 vehicle. It will be interesting to see what is used for flashing these by gm.

I think you're correct on the service number, I'm not sure how I missed that. I'll blame it on not being fully awake.
Here is another link to a listing of PCMs etc by platform and engine type:

Anyone care to help me with models, years, and powertrains to look for?
ALSO, does anyone KNOW what the cutoff year was for the P10, P12a, and P12b?

Thanks,

Mike
P10: MY 02-05
P12: MY 04-07 (P12a=1MB - I believe P12b/2MB is more a myth, I've seen documentation for them but haven't seen one in the wild and I know another forum member mentioned the same.)

For P04/05, I'm not as familiar as the others on here with these PCMs.
