So.. aldl based means pin 2 vpw?? Please correct me if I'm wrong with that, aldl is Assembly Line Diagnostic Link in my head, not a communication protocol.

Also sleeping overnight with this.. Is the OP referring to the vin number as the serial?? If so, the VIN might not even be stored anywhere in the ipc.. I was running with that he wanted the actual serial number and honestly don't even know why he wants it so bad if that is what he's looking for.. Vin makes more sense but it doesn't really matter on anything pin 2 vpw anyways, at least in the USA, other side of the pond might be different?

And yes.. We need more info.. Tazzi is assuming you used an eeprom programmer to read the eeprom but I swear I read that you did it over obd port??

You're correct about the ALDL acronym.
However it's also a protocol. Basically just UART on a single wire, with messages that are formatted with an ID, byte length and checksum.
It's very timing specific as theres nothing stopping data colliding and corrupting each other if 2 things try and transmit at once.
It was used up to about 2005 for body modules on this side of the pond.

Thanks, I think I remember it now with you describing it. 8192 baud or something?? on our side of the pond we stopped using that sometime in 1996ish afaik..
If that's what he's working with then I am no help with that..

Yep thats the one. The protocol this site was born out of. See here viewtopic.php?t=219

In Australia it was used up until about 2007 when can came along. Even cars with a newer PCM in the last few yeaea used one of those PIMs to interface a VPW ot CAN PCM on to the ALDL bus with the other modules.
Have you read the FAQ? For lots of information and links to significant threads see here: http://pcmhacking.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1396

With information as detailed as that no one is going to be able to help even if they wanted to.
What are you doing over the OBD port? What shows everything?

You haven't even specified what model cluster we are talking about. Assume it is a VT to VZ? But is it VT VX or VY VZ? They are very different things.

Information about why you need the serial number would also help. Seems like a strange thing to need to get over OBD. Is it used in a calculation for something?

In VY / VZ the cluster serial is in a table (can't recall exact one off top of my head) and to my knowledge it can't be changed natively over bus (maybe in EEPROM) but you say it's not there so I don't know.

It's been a while and I could be wrong but that's what I remember from looking a while ago, because odometer algorithm requires serial.

More information would be great, what are you doing, what model etc..

Our mistake was just attempting to give this guy some help like he asked..
I didn't want to help him too much, because he'd likely just steal whatever I gave him and resell it elsewhere..
