NVRAM/COMMS BOARD help

Post by Asho88 »

Hi all I’ve spent some time tonight installing my comms board. I’m having trouble getting my PC to read it 🤦🏻‍♂️ I believe it’s running windows 11 any suggestions. Also I noticed when I plugged it into the pc the comms board had a light on indicating power but the NVRAM did not then vice versa in the car NVRAM had a light but the COMMS didn’t is that normal?

No thats not right. Technically the light on the NVRAM is the 'map' light. There are two copies of the calibration on the nvram, and with the map_sw jumper in the default location it is on Map A, and the light is on to indicate this. Most people dont have a reason to use Map B, so its always on Map A, and thus doubles as a power light. It should be on, and it should stay on for a couple of seconds when you turn the ignition off. This indicates the ECM is running properly. If for some reason one day you need to use Map B and you take the Map jumper off, the light won't illuminate anymore, but if everything is in order it will still run.

There are 3 lights on the ECM Comms. One of them is Power. It should be on so long as the ECM power is on. It sounds like you have electrical problems with your install. Make sure you do not install RW (read/write mode) until you have the wiring and power correct, and you are able to get the PC to communicate with the NVRAM and show valid data from the car. This makes it less likely to corrupt the NVRAM due to a wiring problem as the NVRAM chip is in read only mode. If you corrupt the nvram you'll need a programmer to reprogram it. having one on hand is recommended but not required. RW is shipped with the jumper present for you to set it, but its on one pin instead of two meaning it is shipped read only. This is to protect you during this initial install phase while you are getting the installation right and learning how to use the PC software. If you think you want to have a programmer on hand so you can recover from corruption in the future if it happens look for a T48 Programmer on ebay.

Thank you for the response. So do you think I’ve soldered it up wrong or there is an issue with the wiring in the car? So does that mean when plugged into either the car or the PC both lights should be on? Just trying to figure out if there is an actual issue or it’s just not liking windows 11. Cheers

You said in the other thread you got it running, so the ecm wiring must be good. Its likely the install of the comms board or the RW wire on the ECM PCB. Either wrong, or short circuiting to the case or a contact that it shouldn't.

Nah not running just injectors pulsing lol. Doesn’t seem to be going into diagnostic mode. So it’s set a bit advanced Assuming I need the oil light hooked up for that to work. Is there an instruction for comms board listed anywhere on here. I followed one but the pics looked ever so slightly different to mine. It’s an VQ V8 ecu 808 I believe.
