Cold Start Tuning Help

Post by muttley383 »

Hi, I am asking for help again.
I am trying to sort out cold start issues for a 383 stroker with a torque power dual plane hi rise manifold. Once warm (>60deg) it idles not to badly, but before this it is hunting all over the place with it being far to lean.
Attached is a log of a cold start and a copy of a preliminary .bin I am using, can some kind soul have a look and see if there is anything obvious. I am not quick enough with the live updates whilst it is cold and really only have 1 opportunity a day to try and get it right.

Once I can get a reasonable cold start I can take logs every day, to and from work to sort the running fuel and spark.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I hope I dont have to go that far. With the pace I work I will be getting an excess water bill.

Hi all,
attached is a log of a cold start this morning after adjusting .bin as per VN5000 suggestions.
It still hunts quite badly and on first start will stall. It seems to settle down as soon as the ECT is 60deg. There must be some setting in the system at that point.

This maybe another avenue to fix the cold start.
I have the .bin of a Kalmaker W30B tune that was running my PCM before I converted to a manual transmission and ECU. It used to start up ok when cold, but did idle a little rich.
Can someone with kalmaker open the attached kalmaker .bin and tell me associated settings for cold start and where to put them in the TP5 $12P structure?
I do not have the kalmaker software to view the parameters.

I had a look at your log you posted above and it appears your O2 sensor is well down in voltage. It's reading about 650 mV even when the engine has warmed up, should be at least 890 mV when the engine is cold. I can't decide whether your engine is running lean or your O2 is faulty. I usually fit a new O2 when tuning a new combo as it not only gives you a guide what the fuel mixtures are but more importantly the BLM are not pulled in the wrong direction due to a faulty sensor making it very difficult to tune.

If you have replaced the O2 recently then I would say your engine is running very lean at startup. Looking at your target A/F ratios when cold it should be putting in heaps of fuel but your O2 does not reflect that. Have you checked your fuel pressure?

Cheers

I find i have better control over idle fuel with closed throttle turned off,as the map is ignored when its on so the ve is contrlled by rpm only. You will get the same p/width at 800 40kpa as you will at 800 100kpa,but the engine needs more fuel at higher kpa.
