Microcontroller to generate tach signal from J1850 PWM data

Post by SubnetMask »

Does anyone here know of any option for a small microcontroller that can listen to the Ford SCP bus (J1850 PWM) and can be programmed to output a signal to either drive a stock tach directly, or generate a signal that a Dakota Digital SGI-100BT could take on its tach input so it can generate a proper tach signal?

Alternatively, if it might be 'more possible', maybe have it hook up to the crank sensor wires the way the 'Tach Adapt' by Pony Express Performance (long gone, it seems) that I currently have works, which is flaking out, and then output a signal either for the tach direct or for the SGI-100BT?

Dakota Digitals STA-1000 could be an option except for the fact that I already have the SGI-100BT, and they state that the signal generated off the OBD-II data isn't good enough for cruise control modules.

firstly you need to look at the tach and see if it needs an analog signal from a coil (can be done, need to make some analog circuitry, usually something along the lines of a relay coil without the relay bar). Or a digital signal, which should be much easier. Then you need an MCU that can do J1850 read and write the code to put it together. There was a J1850 (vpw) arduino project in the early pcm hammer days. But for ford it'll be J1850 PWM which is a little different. So no, not sure of an off the shelf device, but it's absolutely doable to make something with a bit of a research and you have a lot a flexibility n the hardware side. Search for both ford J1850 pwm arduino to find something that can do that, and if you need analog signal for the tach search something like "analog tach driver from digital" and you'll get a lot of hits. Then you need to bring the pieces together.
Have you read the FAQ? For lots of information and links to significant threads see here: http://pcmhacking.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1396

In stock form, it's driven by the PCM. So I'm not sure what it is, but I'd kind of assume some sort of digital signal. I did end up digging out the current flaking adapter and it's a 'Tach Adapt' by Pony Express Performance, but it seems they're long out of business and it doesn't seem anyone makes anything like it.

The frustrating thing for me is I love all that microcontrollers can do and whatnot, and there are all kinds of things I'd like to do, but I couldn't even thing about coding my way out of a wet paper bag.

So, in case anyone's curious, I ended up solving my problem by switching from a 2004 Mustang PCM to a 2004 Marauder PCM (The Mustang PCM does not have a discrete tach output, the Marauder PCM does) and running the FBGI0 based calibration that I was running on the Mustang PCM on the Marauder PCM (along with reassigning the High speed fan and Low speed fan pin assignments and moving the pins).
