GM Can Controller + Display

Post by Tre-Cool »

So something I've wanted to do for a while but never possessed the skills for, well technically i still don't. but now were in the age of AI. I though i'd give it ago.

Started out the other week with an ESP32-CYD unit & once i burnt through the free credits from Copilot in VS, I signed up to Anthropics Claude. Did a bit more with that device & by making it setup a simulation mode, i could feed it some old can data so i could confirm what i wanted to see on the screen would work.

That device is pretty basic for what i actually had in mind to create, but it gave me some experience, so speaking to Tazzi & another mate, they both recommended an STM32 device.

In the end I purchased a 5 & 7" unit by RiverDI because they have touchscreen based units suited for Automotive use. i.e 12V, canbus & built in IO for analog to digital & PMW & so while they are now heading my way, I got a start learning how to setup what i wanted.

Using the TouchGfx Designer & by integrating it in with VS & Claude, god dam it's making everything easy.

The end goal is to have a Touchscreen controller that can show live Data, i.e gearbox, ecu information, but also to send commands on the bus to the ecu/trans for cruise control activation, throttle map selection & tapshift control, either by touch or hardwired inputs, while ideally suited for use in conversions (this one will be for Nissan Patrols with ls conversions)

I've got checks built in so you can't assign the same input to more than 1 parameter, Shows the voltage of the analog signal, so you can configure the different voltages for the different switch options. most cruise stalks use a ladder logic arrangement, pretty similar to tapshift control too. Also has buffer range between voltages to allow some variability/drift.

I like the backgrounds. Fuck they're expensive units boi. For comparison - the china special that i'm using https://www.waveshare.com/esp32-s3-touc ... ?sku=28151 $56AUD + shipping. Comes with on board can and a few digital IO's.

My HSV & Falcon. Disclaimer I haven't done the in vehicle testing of the hand rolled raw can driver but it works on my ecu simulator so should be good.

Some pretty cool ๐Ÿ˜Ž work there Tre-cool & hjtrbo and great examples coming to life. Very interesting.

Have been cutting my teeth & learning about graphics & sprites on ESP32 based 1.9" LilyGo screen & Waveshare 1.74โ€ touch (little guys lol) using LVGL with CAN access over ESP NOW (simple WiFi) to maybe do 5" round displays for an LS 68 Camaro some day. Maybe.

Seems like subscribed AI help is the way to go & TouchGFX looks the goods for the STM32 based displays. A leap forward from LVGL & similar.

from the looks of Hj's, i think the lvgl might have the edge in regards to looks & screen setup.

I think the STM stuff is mainly meant for a more OEM/commercial look/feel where you dont give the end user a whole lot of variability. i.e designer sets it up to work and it's left alone. dont give the user a whole bunch of customization options.

In between tuning cars, today i replaced the text fields with some AI generated buttons, looks the shiz now.

Also thanks to Kidturbo for confirming the 10 speed gear numbers, so i could update the signal file so it presents the 10 gears correctly.

And i've burnt up all my credits. gotta wait 3 days now. lol

lvgl cannot produce the rich graphics that is possible with TouchGFX. I'm sure tre-cool with some more time you'll eventually spin up a really nice analog gauge that will rival any oem style gauge out there. For the poor mans exp32 there's not a lot of choice when it comes to graphics libraries, lvgl is the bread and butter.

So the hardware turned up last week when i flew out for work, so this friday I'll be around a mates place sorting out some of the extra boards i need for doing some voltage manipulation for some of the GPIO's.

I've set it up with a features like:
Pull to Gnd triggers for Up/Down Tapshift along with DSC enable & also allowing for ladder logic (differential voltage) to also do them. I could probably allow i to do both regardless (something to think about more)
Touchscreen can send different pattern request to the trans, this will be something that will likely be hit/miss depending on the trans calibration. Got it polling the current pattern on the screen to verify, again could probably setup more inputs to switch.
Turn on output/relay when reverse is engaged
User adjustable temp to control output for a trans cooler
Open/Closed loop boost control, 3 different maps, in closed loop u can have a single boost target, target by rpm or per gear boost targets, solenoid buzz test to verify solenoid works. (might even make it buzz on startup)
Cruise Control via screen or ladder logic, i've got enough IO i could allow separate triggers if needed, i might add that in now actually so i can test in my vy ute...
User adjustable screen dim when triggered by input
Aircon trigger by Input or Screen i.e tell ecu to turn on the compressor over CAN
PRND voltage output (tie it into a MR Module for gear indication on commodore cluster)
FAN Control- Run at full tilt or zero, show the current DC%
Fuel Pressure sensor Input (not read from can, but an actual pressure sensor)
Main screen pulls in convertor lock up status, this will require can id to be turned on in tcm tune as not all of them broadcast it
Shows Cruise control status when engaged

I originally started out being really flexible with the inputs so you could chose what was were, then i realized this just over-complicates it, so fixed the input/output Pins.
