Tell me about this "fix via TeamViewer"

Post by morfi »

Does anyone know how these things go? I'm genuinely curious -- not that I would ever use it, even if it was me who got paid.

I'm getting carried away with my imagination that you'll be connected to a cracker, who downloaded all possible pirated software he could find dated back to 1980's on his 100TB drive, consumed these obscure pdf tutorials with 4197401724 typos and now he'll be offering his humble services for money (western union, sir - or crypto) by h4ck1ng your odometer.

So you downloaded and ran teamviewer, wired $200 after getting 3 phone calls from your bank to make sure you really want to do this, and... what happens then? (inb4: you end up with invoice.pdf.exe on your desktop and your odometer stays as-is).

Not sure exactly what you're talking about but sometimes crackers replace one copy protection with another, then they sell the cracked software with their own protection and sell it but under cut the real company that invested the time to make it. Thus hurt future development and make money on someone else's work. So re-sellers buy the cracked version and pay a premium for a keygen and they become a reseller and start spamming around and then they teamviewer in and install it for you and lock it to your machine, so its still protected but they make the $ instead of the app developers. They don't want to share for free. They cash in on someone elses work / stolen software. Professional commercial pirates. And yes, no guarantees you don't get malware, and no guarantees it works properly. And you probably cant update it or move it to another machine, too. They also have the opportunity to backdoor your machine intentionally or accidentally if they are installing previous backdoored software they just pirated from some other site.

I've placed too much irony in OP that diverged from the point (I wasn't asking about stealing software and reselling)

rephrasing in plain English:
sometimes users on forums I won't mention, ask for some car features such as "how to unlock this cool icon on my cluster", and the answer will be "my can unlok 4 u with teemviewer".
and it wasn't just once - it's quite often where car modifications are offered through remote desktop and I was wondering how does that go in practice

I mean I can imagine you may have to have some diagnostic tool that exposes network interface, which you then share as a subnetwork via teamviewer's vpn, or that it has usb interface which you expose over network stack to the guest and then the does the programming. It's just that details on how this goes (required hardware or other prerequisites) are never explained in the thread because... "hi. i can do. pm me on telegram"

Theres several tools that allow sharing USB ports over the internet, so they use their software with a J2534 tool that you would have on your end to do the programming.
Its not a very ideal setup being its the raw USB traffic being sent, where any latency can cause the J2534 driver to freak out, but it does work so long as its not across the globe and both people are using quick internet
