vr v8 wont run when timing set in diagnostic mode

hi all i have a vr v8 ute i just put a second hand vs v8 engine in it i bought the car off a mate who had a fair bit of trouble with it i put new engine in and had vl400 reprogram memcal for me to suit crow cam i can get it to run by setting the timing with timing light not in diagnostic mode but when starting its very tight . when i set timing in the diagnostic mode at 10 degrees its starts then pops and stalls i have checked earths, plugs,leads, has new fuel pump its not showing any error codes either the only other prob is charge light is on i cant figure out what the hell the problem is its doing my head in big time it will run in diagnostic mode when timing set at 10 degrees but as soon as pull 5&6 bridge pin out it pops backfires and stalls does any one have any theories or have had this prob before pls help going crazy

Have you checked the harmonic balancer hasnt spun?Do the timing marks line up when no1 piston is tdc?

Have you got a copy of the bin your using?

All looks o.k.
Reference angle is right for v8 with std ign.

do u have any ideas what it could be causing prob mate

Have you checked the harmonic balancer hasnt spun?Do the timing marks line up when no1 piston is tdc?

This would be where I would start looking, check #1 TDC with exhaust valve just closing - dizzy might be 180 deg out

ya reckon it will run in diagnostic mode but if dizzy was 180 out it would not run at all would it
