202 UC Torana/Delco Conversion

It's been a while coming, but I've been fixing a few mechanical things & gathering parts for this conversion including an NVram from VL400. As the subject says, it's a 1979 UC Torana, trimatic, 173cu of the generals finest & rust in the usual places. I've now fitted a 202 with a 12 blue head, 220°solid cam that I've had lying around for years.

Dummy fit the manifold to make sure it all fits.

I've modified the loom, deleted & moved wires as needed. In the above pic, can the knock sensor be placed in the threaded hole between #5 & #6 injector, or is there some other place that it can be fitted, like thread the plate that is now covering the fuel pump hole in the block?

well i think you'd be better off putting the knock sensor on the bottom of the block, but more of an issue than that is that you may not get any decent readings from it as the 202 is a different block size so it might detect false knock, can only try though i guess.

also if you are going to make a plate for the fuel pump area, i reckon a thick bit of metal plate will be the go, be more solid and more likely to transfer the noise through it better.

Judging by your reply, you don't run a knock sensor on your 202? I can always leave it disconnected.

i would love to run one but from everything i read its not going to work properly so i haven't bothered .....

also i dunno weather things like the straight cut timing gears would make it false knock or not.

I've got a solid cam, straight cut gears as well, might leave it disconnected. I don't want to confuse things to much.

yeah im going for a solid cam with my current rebuild, but in theory it should be right when the engine is up to temp and the tappets are set correctly, but who knows!

Even with things up to temp. & rockers adjusted correctly you still have some valve train noise. With a "quiet" exhaust, they still sound like a "Grey Holden" 6.

Small update, I fitted the 173 into an engine frame, installed a 202 blue head to make sure everything works before it goes into the car.

It fired up almost straight away, so mustn't have deleted any wiring that was necessary.
