Starting out on a MAF

Post by Helical »

My project has been to up spec my VS Series II 5.0L V8 manual ute to series 3 spec. This started when I replaced the engine with a roller 5L from a wrecked VT Series 1. Hindsight, this is a big headache!

I finally put the new/modified engine loom on my ute yesterday and hooked up the PCM running a RT modified DRRR thanks to VL400.

So now I can actually have a play with the tuning side of things. I connected to the PCM this morning to check it's all working, just need to educate it on reading the VSS as I'm running the T5 not Getrag box, everything else seems to be fine at this point.

Currently editing the ADX for the VT V8 (yoda69's) to suit the VS Series 3 V8.

I know most of you seem to hate MAF based systems, but are there any tips on where to start with regards to tuning/tinkering? I am new to tuning anything more than a lawnmower/chainsaw/2 stroke nitro model engine so have a bit to learn.
I have a larger MAF from an LS1 sitting around, wondering if it would be worth setting that up? Currently the airbox pipe is the smallest restriction so I will be looking at that...
I am yet to get a wideband, looking at the MTX-L.

Nothing wrong with mafs guys only hate them cause they run out of puff past 1bar or so, if that other maf is Delphi then the curve is similar just fueling may need checking, get a mtxl or 14.7 to 1 kit and wire in the linear output to the pcm you can log afrs in with tunerpro then

Thanks, when you are referring to 1 bar, is that vacuum? Just trying to piece together bits I have read around this site. Boost seems to be talked about in PSI and Bar units come up with vacuum based systems from my understanding.

The larger MAF is a Delphi, looks identical except having about 10mm larger diameter and the splitter doesn't look as wide.

have you got a larger throttle body? would be good to put that on with the maf if your going to do it, 1 bar is 14.5psi, just a n/a motor like yours a maf system is fine.

Standard throttle body atm, probably the first thing I would upgrade along with the air box. If I didn't have the larger MAF sitting around I wouldn't even think about is. The LS1 MAF is left over from my brother's statesman when he went OTR with a MAFless tune.

Ok got it. I knew they were both units of pressure was just curious about the way they are applied.

Cheers,
