VS S3 Manual Log - Problems Or Normal

Post by Monarols71 »

Hi all. I've finally got a couple of logs, and me being new to all this, I was hoping someone could lead me in the right direction.
The main problem is a symptom very similar to a stuck throttle in a carbed car, even though it was hardly noticeable in this log. I'll keep logging and hopefully get a good one of the main problem.
But, is there a problem with the O2 sensor in this log, or is that normal? And the spark advance dancing all over the shop?
VS S3 1/2 304 manual ute with MAF engine, standard except for mild cam, full twin cat exhaust and cold air.
Any advice or assistance greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards

The spark advance does jump around like that in order to help control idle speed.

On the 'item lists' page it shows you have an error DTC 49 - crank cam signal error.

Your left hand 02 sensor signal isnt moving, but the right hand one is. Might pay to check the left hand side wiring/grounds and sensor. Someone might be able to advise what the common faults there are, ive never owned a VS.

Thanks antus.
There is only one O2 sensor on the 304 VS S3 (after April 1999 I think) with the VT engines in them. Bloody hybrids.
I did see the DTC 49 error on that log, but not on the previous ones. :? We have put a new rebuilt ignition module, brand new hall effect sensors in the distributor, and brand new coil on her about 3 months ago, as we just died on the edge of the street. No spark. The fire just went out.
I did get a log this afternoon with the "sticking throttle" type symptoms. I'll try to post that one up.
Thank you.

Thanks VL400.
All info greatly appreciated, and I'll go over all the tests again later.
I'd read all of that before when we were trying to sort our "no fire" problems. Maybe A.S.S. stuff is no good, but will still check.
Anyhow, here is a log a bit earlier today with no codes.

VL400 - After skipping back through that post, I remembered this morning about the hall effect plate. N.L.A. from Holdon to your wallet, that is why we bought one from Automotive Service Solutions. Thanks for the reminder.

I got a scan this morning of our problem, although it wasn't as bad as it gets. Around the 42 to 45.5 second mark of the scan is where it's at, after backing out the drive. No throttle, no speed, no clutch and it revs up all by herself, and then settles down after a few seconds. I've tried to make some connection with other inputs, but can't seem to match it up with anything. It does the same thing sometimes when you come off the throttle when driving, which can be a bit disconcerting.
And that code has gone walkabout?? I thought they had to be cleared with a Tech1 or something?
Maybe some body will see the cause.
Thanks to all.

At about 50 seconds its showing around 75ish IAC steps which is prob a bit higher than normal for a hot idle. Is this what you normally get and have you adjusted the idle stop screw at all??

I've never touched the idle screw, but that doesn't mean it is still as the factory set it. I'll check it tomorrow.
Just by going over the few logs I have, it doesn't seem to get any lower than 60+ steps at 92+ degrees temp.
I do know that the cam timing is correct, and the base timing is set to 10 degrees BTDC, because I did it myself.
Temperature?!. That's got me thinking. Doesn't seem to play up when cold, but seems to only do it when warm, and then only sometimes. :hmm:
What should the step count be when hot, and is that adjusted just by the throttle screw?? Would it hurt to take it back some?
Regards, and thank you.

Normally around 20-50 steps at hot idle, generally aim for the lower end of the range.

Thank you. I'll get that done when the laptop comes back. I'm assuming it's done via the throttle adjustment screw?
