Methanol Cold Start
Methanol Cold Start
I'm trying to get a reasonable cold start for a V6 with an SC14 blower running on methanol. I can start the thing using another bin, run it for a couple of minutes, then change to the 12P bin that the car runs on, then it will idle to warm up correctly. I've used the same setup that we us in the n/a motor but it doesn't like it much, runs for a minute then leans out to point that it stops. I'm not sure how to increase the richness while warming up, the target mixture appears OK but it does seem to follow. I've change several tables, but it's not changing.
I've included a short log, then engine is running between 3:21 & 4:23.

Re: Methanol Cold Start
which bin file is that one ? and can you also post the other bin
ie. of the one it runs on at first and the normal one it uses ?
also post the adx your using please.

Re: Methanol Cold Start
The ADX is 12P V111 2bar methanol.adx
The other bin. is this one, if you look at it you'll see that it still has a lot of petrol settings. I've adjusted the "Cold Engine A/F ratio vs coolant temp & map" table with some success, but still hunting real bad, so I'll keep adding fuel via this table tomorrow when it's cold again.

Re: Methanol Cold Start
ok so jm1 best bin is the one that starts good cold ?

Yes that is correct.Holden202 wrote:ok so jm1 best bin is the one that starts good cold ?
I was giving some more thought about the adjustments to the table in my previous post, this is only moving the target AFR, isn't it?

Re: Methanol Cold Start
yeah adjusting the cold engine AFR will effectively make it richer/leaner .... so this will fix your issue, but the problem will be if the actual AFR is say 5.2 and the commanded is 4.5 or something like that it basically means its up to shit as far as being calibrated .....
i'll try and get a look at it today to see what the difference is between the two tunes and i'll post back later.

Re: Methanol Cold Start
also just want to check, with the tune that wont work properly does it actually start ok just wont keep running or is it not starting either ?

Re: Methanol Cold Start
It will now start, just wont keep running as it appears to lean out to the point of not running. Before I made many changes, it would start the engine run after it was warmed up.

Re: Methanol Cold Start
ok .... assuming by the numbers in the tune this car is running something like a 60 or 80lb injector ?
the problems are this .....
injector rate - the jm1v111.5.4 is using the right injector rate for a big injector (MAP A .035, MAP B .037) jm1 best bin is using a much different one which will make it run roughly 3 times richer
(MAP A .105, MAP B .110)
ve table - the jm best bin has ALOT more VE especially in the lower kpas, whereas the other one is 20-40 VE different in that area and about 10 different in other areas which makes the jm1 best bin richer everywhere also.
cranking fuel - looks like the jm1 best bin has more cranking fuel which will help too
AFR tables - looks like the jm1 best bin is using all petrol AFR numbers in the tables, while this will make it leaner (difference between the amount of petrol v's methanol requirements) i think the above injector rate will still leave it a bit richer as the methanol AFR is roughly 2.3 time petrol.
i guess theres probably not going to be any easy way to fix this .... assuming the injector rate is right though (.035/.037) i'd suggest putting a stock V6 or the jm1 best bin VE table into the other tune and see if that works any better.
i also think your map a idle afr table it too lean, which might not be helping either. get the v6 petrol one and divide it by 2.3 .....
do that and if you have no joy get a log up of it.

Re: Methanol Cold Start
Yeah, 60lb injectors.
I changed the Idle AFR to 4.5 which had it running better this morning.
I answer more tomorrow, got a go to work.
