V6 turbo timing

Post by BIGALSRYD »

How much timing are you guys with turbo buicks running? Am currently running about 24 degrees at around 8 pound. I would have thought this was a bit much. It is on pump fuel, no intercooler. Base tune was about 18 and was breaking down under full load. Have crept up to 24 and has come good, and not sure if I should keep adding some as it has just come good at 24. Timing at 100kpa is about 28-30, then ramps down. Having not really played with these motors or turbo's, I have read that timing retard may need to be anywhere up to around 1.5 degrees per psi which puts me down around 16-18. Just curious as to what other people are running in their combos. Motor and car are just a hack for a bit of fun and learning curve. 250+km stock motor with turbo added.

my brothers VP V6 turbo is running similar timing on 14psi! no knock either so if anything yours might be conservative, what AFR are you commanding under boost ?

i started with really conservative numbers for my brothers and slowly added timing and it just keeps going harder and harder.

will also depend on the motor too, earier motor will have less static compression than a VR motor so all this will come into play.

Ok cheers exactly what I wanted to hear before I start pushing a bit more timing into it. Aiming around 11.5 under boost, but at the moment it is a bit richer than that up in the rpm. Your brothers holding up well to 14 psi? Is that standard motor and on pump fuel? Intercooler? How much boost can these motors take in standard form with a safe tune?

brothers car is bog stock as far as we know, 150,000kms on the motor. all we've really done is changed to the PCV system for boost.

from what i've heard some people are putting up to 18psi into these things, delcowizzid or Jayme might be able to shed some light on what they have run in their experience.

as far as holding up well its only done about 500kms since installing the turbo as its currently unregistered and may end up being a track only car ... i dunno what the limit is but we haven't broken anything yet :P

you'd probably find you can even lean the mixture out a but from 11.5 i have my brothers on 12.5 at 100kpa, and scales to 12.00 at 14psi and we did notice some more performance leaning it slightly but also we found more chance of knock with that too ... uses alot less fuel than when we started with the entire boost table at 11afr though :P

oh and his is on BP Ultimate.

in my gemini i have the 202 at about 9.3:1 comp ratio and running boosted methanol, at 18psi (whoops) it was putting 27degrees timing in it and no knocking on the dyno .... could possibly take some more timing we'll see.

i run 14 degrees at 14-17psi makes damn near 300rwkw and runs 11.5 adding extra fuel at the drags last weekend made it faster from 11.7:1 to 11.5 made a difference more timing did nothing to times
