Windows 7 update
hey all,
completely off topic but does anyone know if windows 7 wave 1.1 will be better to use than just the service pack 1 for it, I know it's a bit more to download but if it has the same & more updates I guess it's gotta be better?

Re: Windows 7 update
Here is the link to files I was talking about;
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... px?id=5842
I guess the other option could be go to windows 8 as it should have all the fixes, but I guess I should mention I don't actually have any issues so maybe not worth updating?
I got bored & downloaded just the actually updates as I was recommended & x86 loaded fine but the x64 actually needs a readiness thing downloaded too & is another 360Mb not sure if that would have been already part of the WAVE package!

Re: Windows 7 update
the service pack jsut contains a bunch of performance and bug fixes. you should always keep 100% up to date on windows update, they fix a lot of security vulnerabilities that malware and viruses use to get into your system. just use window supdate, keep checking and installing till it doesnt offer you any more. sometimes you have to install the service pack manually but it mostly offers it through windows update, and its a smaller download doing it that way as it only gets the different parts of the files rather than every file like the manual download.
whenever ms fixes a security vulnerability, the malware idiots downlaod the patch, figure out what the actual vulnerability is, then exploit it in the hopes that most people wont update straight away. so be vigilant!.

Re: Windows 7 update
oh cool good to know Jayme, but wouldn't a good anti-virus cover most of that apart from performance updates?
Re: Windows 7 update
a good anti virus _may_ catch a virus during or after infection. by keeping completely patched, you are patching the very holes they use to infect you in the first place! making the anti virus software a last resort, rather than the only line of defence.

Re: Windows 7 update
Yeah totally true, I just hate too many resources running in background, guess just need a performance system for net with all resources running & another system for no net access without resources running!
By name of good anti virus that's not too resource hungry do most people use AVG?
I've personally found it better than most!

Re: Windows 7 update
it seems to be getting a bad rep lately but I use the microsoft one (microsoft security essentials). its the fastest one ive found, and its made by ms, seeing as how they made the o/s youd think they know what they are doing...

Security patches wont slow your system down. They are just bug fixes which replace broken code and they dont use more resources and often improve performance and stability. Ive also had a good run with microsoft security essentials (MSE). We used to use AVG back in the XP days at work, but had some stability issues with it in the early days of windows 7. Some win 7 machines there are still running it to this day and it seems quite good again now.
