Yeah Mate,
I'm not so much worried about the noise, more that the system voltage is dropping to 12volts (or less sometimes) when the car is idling in drive. Once the revs come up so does the voltage so the alternator might be getting a little tired? It is the original alternator so it's getting on in age as well as having done almost 220,000km's

Just picked up a brand new genuine GM alternator VS-VY so i'll fit that today and see how things go. Overall the cars not running to badly at the moment.
edit: new alternator fitted, the alternator whine is gone, huraaaa, even though I did put a new condenser on the old alternator. voltage is up 14.4 volts instead of 14.2 and the voltage is more stable and holding better under load @ idle even with the larger pulley fitted

I would of disassembled the old one and machined the slip rings, changed the bearings, checked the diodes and replaced the reg. Good as a new one!
I'm the director of VSH (Vlad's Spec Holden), because HSV were doing it ass about.

Thanks, Battery voltage is more stable, I haven't checked the PCM yet but I expect that would also have crept up a bit. As long as it's stable I'm happyVL400 wrote:That just sounds like hard work

I should have recon'd it, as it would only have cost me a new regulator and I could have done the rest at work but it's the missus daily and I couldn't afford to have it off the road for a couple of days whilst I did the work
