Can I recycle some old PC BIOS chips ?

Post by T2000 »

Sorry if this has been answered before... I did a quick search but drew a blank.

As the title says I have a drawer full of EEPROMS pulled from dead PC hardware.

Most of them are 29c011a or 29ee011... a few intel and MX etc etc etc.

a quick look at some data sheets shows that many of these are 5v 128k x 8.

Is it possible or worthwhile trying to use some of these in my tuning adventures?
Or should I stick with the 27SFxxx ??

Thanks for any advice :)

Cheers, Chris

provided it has the same pin outs as a 27cXXX then it should work ok.

If the pinouts match and then if the size of the chip is larger than the tune, align the tune with the top of the chip (so the data ends at 0xFFFF) and you'll be in business. It also needs to be fast enough, but almost certainly is.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I have a VY Super6 coming to pay me a visit soon. I'll make a memcal with a zif socket and try a few.
If I have a little success I might make a confirmed working list of some of the more common ones.
