Ecotec into VN Questions

Post by DanWA »

Rather than start 10 threads figured this section would be the most appropriate.

Long story short, ecotec into Series 1 VN with T5

Running VS ECU/Loom (Memcal from The1)

Replacement engine is a VT engine, i understand i will need to use VS inlet manifold to piss the EGR off etc?

I NEED to retain working aircon and heater
What compressor is best to use? VS? Any extra wiring or considerations? All the plumbing is there for it as it was connected to the broken engine i pulled out just not gassed or belt on. Bracket had been modified so compressor didnt hit body.

I want to use the standard temp gauge in the cluster, will this be fine since using VS Inlet Manifold?

Can i use the VT Injectors? is this a straight forward swap? Are they even better than the VS ones?

As it had a VN Ecu/Loom there is no MAF, what is the best model to get a MAF from? VS since it has a VS Loom/ECU?

Pinouts for the body plug into the ECU, can someone explain which ones will need to be swapped for a VN Series 1?

If there is anything i have missed please let me know, don't mind spending a little bit of coin to do it properly as this needs to be a reliable daily driver

if you wanted to run it on the vn computer you can do that, I made a ecotec with 808 tune a while back, it would only require changing ecotec coolant sensor to vn sensor and some minor re-locating of wiring, but its probably going to be easier than fitting the ecotec loom and computer

you should be able to find the wirng loom stuff here http://www.oldholdens.com/temp/carstuff ... 0diagrams/

Thanks for the reply

The conversion was already done when i bought the car with the VN ECU/Loom so would assume the loom i just pulled out has those mods already

I want to run the later ecu/loom for all the extras they come with

what extras is that though, the computer is maf based, other than that its just handly if you want to fit an electronic auto ? .. anyways totally up to you. I didn't realise the motor had already been put in there!

Yeah i started a Members Ride thread

Isn't the timing and Sequential injection totally different?

Feel free to school me up on that if it is going to be easier, i just need it reliable as possible... previous owner made it sound like this engine died due to pinging

from what I have seen they go way! better mafless on the 808.

btw sequential is pretty much useless from driveability/performance point of view. Its almost strictly there for better emissions at low rpm.
Sequential breaks down to batch injection once over 2-3k rpm anyway for most ECUs.

its probably did. The fueling of VN tune will be way off for ecotec and the timing is way to aggressive for the ecotec.

They are a different beast to the pre ecotec in many ways. Even the pre ecotec series 2 and 1 were way different to each other even though people consider they virtually the same.

So i am better off running the current ecu/loom setup with the inlet/ac off the broken engine on the VT engine? And get someone here to make a replacement memcal to suit?

Keeping in mind this needs to be reliable. Don't want another premature broken engine because of a hybrid tune if that makes sense?

quick answer yes, but long answer is it might be a good opportunity to get a NVRAM and USB comms board and load the tune yourself, then you can get a wideband and dial in the tune spot on in real time as 202's tune will make a good but not perfect starting point.

I recall his tune used EV1 type VS only injectors and the exhaust was custom for his Torrana? different exhaust means tune will need to be adjusted to suit.

The injectors will be the first thing you need to look at if you use 202's tune. They run at 3 bar and flow and respond differently to the latter green EV6 (777) injectors which they run 3.5 bar.

really it's down to MAP or MAF, both systems will do the job, though VS Factory setup will be less hassle on the tune side. Be a fair bit to redo on an 808, Depends if you want to do tuning yourself or just install and run.
