Re: Ecotec into VN Questions
yeah was petrol
it was my daily driver, 600 kms a week for years!!
it was petrol but the map switch allowed you to have timing for 91 octane fuel or more aggressive timing for 98 octane fuel.
the ecotec generally needed less timing across the board, and from memory was rich down low in the revs and lean in the top end, but they was with 2.5 inch free flowing exhaust so not sure how that compares to stocker!
but I do know for a fact the reason your setup would be pinging would be due to way to much timing in general ... I think you'd find you could put my 808 ecotec tune in with that VT motor and it would work pretty well and probably be a bit too rich in most areas if anything!
the timing map I used for this was actually logged from a stock VS with a map sensor connected to it! probably got about 40 logs from that car to make the timing map!
from what I've read above either option would be suitable but its more a matter of if you are happy with stock ecotec setup for less work, or happy to spend a bit more time fine tuning the 808 tune to suit which will yield a bit nicer performer.
the main difference I noticed, was response with the 808, maybe slightly more overall power but that might also be due to having the timing more dialled in with the 808, economy, really nothing in it either way to say one was better than the other, reliability, well the only let down was a failed fuel pump!
so I guess you have a decision to make, do you do with the setup that's already in it, easier, but more time tuning, or do you go with the vs pcm, more wiring and fucking around, but more turn key and drive
I know what I'd do and its not the MAF option hehehe

No matter what the question is, the answer is always more horsepower!

Re: Ecotec into VN Questions
oh also forgot to mention, check the motor that came out of the car, make sure its got a VN knock sensor in it, if its running an ecotec one that could be half the issues! ecotec has a white or grey lug on it where the wire connects, earlier one is black!

have a read through here ... http://pcmhacking.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=144
this is the topic of my ecotec conversion into the Torana, plenty of info in there on how to properly do it and also some info on the timing map differences and such.

Re: Ecotec into VN Questions
I used to go on there regularly but just don't seem to find the time these days, also no longer owning the Torana I kinda lost interest in it
