limiting voltage out of a bridge rectifier

Post by delcowizzid »

so my boat wasnt charging due to blown rectifier so i went and got one from jaycar and fitted it.works a charm but i need to limit voltage as when the battery gets charged volts end up heading north of 16 volts as they do on evinrudes with only a rectifier not the rec/reg built in one.whats the simplest way to control max volts to 14v
my rectifier is like below jaycar 600v30 ish amps.total charging system current of the engine is around 6 amps supossidly

get a 13.8V regulator. Just checked jaycar, looks like they dont sell them anymore.

Once you get a reg, you should be able to add a power transistor on the output to boost current as most TO 220 case type regs only do 1-3A.

something like this.

Another option is a shunt regulator connected directly *across* the battery. It does nothing until the battery voltage starts to exceed 14.2 volts. Above this it starts to pull current proportional to how far the voltage is above the set point. All in (6 amps) by say 14.4 volts.

it has to be the 6 wire type not a 4 or 5 wire one.
