I too been thinking about it, to make it viable we need a cheap raw material which yields a lot of ethanol.

molasses is pretty cheap at retail price of about $1 per Kg. if you got bulk deal and cut the middle man and bought it wholesale I would imagine it to be a lot cheaper.

I too have prices from 1.7 -1.8 for 98, even shit 91 is around 1.55 atm.

His home is powered by 3 reasonable wind turbines, a solar panel array about the size of a mid size truck and a bunch of batteries he scored cheap from telstra and disposals from parli house.

He also was brewing his own bio diesel for a while, I dont really know the process he used but I do know he had about 3000 litres of old cooking oil still laying around lol and two 1200 litre vats in his shed he used to mix up his concoction.

Is it possible/financially viable to brew ethanol at home? As fuel prices in aus where I live are getting upwards of 1.70 AUD a litre for 98ron its becoming a little ridiculous and I have been thinking about home brew fuels in a more serious way of late. Im not a fool, and not about to blow myself up I am well aware that brewing up mixtures of chemicals can be a dangerous process but if the proper precautions are taken it should be safe.

If you live on a farm and have cheap access to the raw materials required then yes you can brew your own ethanol. I do believe however (from speaking to another aussie who may or may not be doing exactly that) that it is illegal in Australia to make your own fuel however it is certainly not here in NZ.

At the end of the day, it's just alcohol.

I've looked at it and it wouldn't be cheap to set up but once you were going it should pay for itself. I guess it also depends on how much fuel you using and whether or not you can brew enough to satisfy as you would need to re-tune to suit.

Your probably correct. I do believe you could possibly brew your own fuel if you pay the relevant taxes. Everything has a price.

Here in Auckland NZ the council is proposing that people will require a permit to scatter a loved ones ashes in a public place after paying the applicable fee of course....
