Old School Buick V6

Post by Holden202T »

For as long as I can remember dad has had this old V6 sitting in the shed, rebuilt in mint condition etc etc .... believed to be 78-79 vintage.

a few years back my brother bought it off him and fitted it to a HQ Ute, had it in the car for a while and eventually pulled the motor and scrapped the ute....

The motor was ok, but it had some oil issues, needed some tappet cover baffles and a few things resolved, my brother never really got around to doing it and as a result the motor ended up covered in oil and dirt and then after pulling it from the ute it sat under cover but in the outside for a long time .... mud wasps in the ports and all sorted of lovely stuff like that.

A while ago I swapped it for an LS1 I no longer needed and some cash because I didn't want to see it go to waste being so rare .... and no I don't particularly have a use for it :P

so I've started to slap it back together, just roughly to get it running again (had a piston removed, head and valley) plan is to get it all going on my shopping trolley test stand, then worry about a full rebuild one day down the track.

this is how it sits after mostly getting it back together.

missing the dominator converter, a lot of bolts and carby was fully corroded :(

I've managed to make one good carby out of it and another one that I had (450/465 4 barrels) .... the cam looks a bit average, the lifters I pulled have worn the case hardening ... but on the up side the lifters are the same as holden 6 cylinder and the pushrods look to be holden v8 length so a few common and available parts in it :)

the T350 looks to be in ok condition compared to the motor, other than the converter rusted and thrown out !!

anyways thought this might interest some of the Buick V6 fans on here!

no its even fire, and the manifold on it is an edelbrock dual plane that was brand new when my brother put the motor in so its in mint condition :) should last me forever!

and big ass dizzy with coil on cap! looks like an ignition module from USA will plug into it then interface to a delco too ...... :comp:

alternator is a holden 6 unit and dad made custom brackets to mount it!

its very dirty, but theres some nice cleanness under the dirt :)

I've been doing some more research on the engine casting numbers and such, best I can determine is the block is 1979-85 3.8 and the heads are 1979-84 .... so not sure if they are all originally from the same motor or not but looks like they were likely towards the last of the models before they went to the EFI buick we see today.

its also got cast headers, with the passenger side one going under the motor and connecting in the drivers header (in a rwd vehicle this is) then that goes out to the exhaust ... I believe this is from when they were in front wheel drive cars ....

on my motor the drivers exhaust manifold has had the other bank port welded up so its just like a normal rear wheel drive exhaust system now.

theres a bit of a leak on the spin on oil filter adaptor, probably just an o-ring ... other than that runs great considering hahaha.

yeah I have no immediate plans for it other than to slowly collect parts to rebuild it bigger and better :)

as for parts, it looks like the lifters are the same part number as holden 6, and the pushrods are holden v8 items .... that's about it other than the alternator!

gaskets are still made for them in felpro brand so that's an easy one ... probably the only real concern will be decent pistons and a cam, the rest should be re-usable from what I have.

yeah I know they are fairly common in the US so I figure parts shouldn't be too hard to get ... might be more a matter of cost ... but i'll be waiting till I have a use for it before I go that far, too hard to pick the right parts without a target :)
