ecotec 4runner

hey guys,
i am currently in the process of putting a VT ecotec v6 into my mates Toyota 4 runner with him after we killed the stock 3vz-e boat anchor haha,
now after some research i have decided the easiest way to go about this is to run a VN/VP 808 ecu and wiring loom,
the parts we have acquired so far
2 VT ecotecs one good one and one for parts/template block
vp loom
vp 808 ecu
vn map sensor
Vn-s manual starter motor

he would also like to run holden202t's ecotec $12p tune for the 808
i already have TPv5 RT am i correct in thinking that we will need a NVRAM?
im not sure about what else i need to at least load the tune to the ecu

ok first obvious difference I can see, this motor being a VT one has the egr on the back of the passenger side head, this is not on a VS motor, not sure if you want to keep it or not, but I have a feeling it might change the tune a bit, also I don't know if the VT motor was different to the VS as far as head flow or cam specs etc, but these things can all change the tune!

so if you want to be able to tune this thing in realtime, then yes you'll need an NVRAM and if you don't already have a computer with serial/usb port in it you will need to get that aswell.

aside from that, follow my Ecotec Torana thread for details on what sensors and such to change to make it work with the 808!

well the spot where the egr goes into the manifold is where I put my IAT or MAT sensor

cool, just went out and had a look to refresh my memory, found a MAT sensor on a vn manifold i have lying around and had a look at the EGR, i can see how you fitted yours in the EGR hole near the throttle body

well no there actually wasn't a hole I drilled and tapped it, but it was in that location that looked like it had a provision for something else.

also you'll need the coolant sensor of that same vn manifold !

oh yea, yours was a vs motor without the EGR, so no hole haha, turns out that the EGR hole is the right size to fit the sensor anyway
thanks for reminding me about the coolant sensor, i missed it when stripping the VN motor as it was snapped off so ill go raid the wreckers haha
got the motor in the other day and checked the fitment of it with all its accessories in place, alternator is a bit close to the bonnet, almost touches so i might have to drop the drivers side mount a bit and i will need to make some log style exhaust manifolds to get it to fit haha




also found a spare vac port in the manifold to mount the map sensor, i wasn't sure it would work but it turns out its the same as where you put yours just your throttle body is upside down haha, just need a more flexable hose on it

is there any way to get the motor back further ? you have so much room at the back it seems like a waste and would probably solve the alternator ... plus it makes weight front and rear better!

wow time flys when your working flat out haha, got the 4 runner on the road for a test run tonight
took it for a wash and a quick drive out of town haha,
now for the progress report, first off i managed to move the crossmember back about 15-20mm by slotting the holes and cutting the shifter hole out more to clear the transfer case shifter, that allowed the alternator to not hit the bonnet at all anymore haha, i also decided that seeing as i was going to had build the exhaust manifolds i might aswell have a go at full extractors rather than log style ones, im happy with them for my first attempt at them
fitted a commodore radiator by cutting the mounts out of a vs wreck and modifying them to bolt to the pannel behind the headlights and fitted the temp sensor to the thermostat housing ( i ended up swapping a tow bar from the vt we got the motor from for an entire vr just to get that sensor haha)

test drive went well, it does have a issue in that it doesnt want to idle and runs realy rough untill you open the throttle a bit, could it be a vacuum leak or is it more likely a sensor not working right?

I'd be checking the IAC .... it might not be opening properly or at all.

the pipes look suitable, I dare say its going to be pretty loud though looking at the rest of the exhaust hahaha!
