Again thanks for the info, looks like I will be kept quite busy between supercharger install, engineering certification and ECM tuning. Might need the EMC tuning soon if I cannot pass emission test with supercharger.

Also, curious as to how/why series 1 engine would have series 2 memcal data. Would it have been an update done by GMH dealer at a service during warranty.

probably find the ecu died and someone has just swapped it out without looking what memcal it had in .they got released with all sorts of different tunes depending on the year and month of production as well.and someone probably just asked for a vn ecu at the wrecker and put it in without looking at the memcal.performance tune can be had for $50 + 8 postage from most people greenfoam on jc's hes nicefrog on ebay he has tunes for sale all the time.i can do one too but if you plan on charging it you are gonna want to get some gear to tune yourself anyway as a dyno tune is upwards of $1000 .

heres a good thread to get you into it shows how to chip a memcal and stuff quite a few questions been covered there http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/tun ... stall.html

Vehicle build date is Nov 89 and service history would make substitute memcal or emc very unlikely, however reality is emc is 01227808 with memcal ATFY4410. What difference would series 2 memcal data make to series 1 engine. Is series 2 memcal data necessarily better and compatible with series 1 engine.

Back to the question of supercharging and detonation, do not believe low boost kits include chip change and would not knock sensor be able to safegard against any damage from any mild detontation that might occur. Likely to limit boost to 3-4 psi to begin with.

The standard map sensor will only read 1 bar of air pressure (atmospheric pressure), and therefor will top at at 0 psi. From the ecus point of view it'll supply the same amount of fuel and the same timing from that point and it wont be able to learn to handle the boost properly. If it does ping and retard at the very top end it'll learn this for the whole boost range as it just wont be awear whats happening. To do it properly you'll need a 2 bar map sensor, and then a tune thats designed to work with that and maps out the fuel and spark in to at least the first few psi. There is the factory supercharge tune on here, although Im not sure how suitable that is. delcowizzid could probably help you further with the correct part numbers and a good tune, I know hes made up some memcals for boosted engines before.

All info gratefully received, even if it complicates what was supposed to be a simple engine performance upgrade.

Let me know if this topic is now outside the forum.

Your comment regarding standard map sensor operating range has answered a question I had as to how the low cost low boost kits can operate with standard map & tune, which is how they are marketed. It would appear that they simply let the map sensor top-out at 0 bar and do not care what the ecu then does for tune. Sounds like considerable performance potential lost through not upgarding the map & tune.

From our discussion it follows that emission control would be poor without a change of map sensor & tune and therefore I should not bother to have emission test for the engineering certificate until all changes made.

a lot of the bolt on charger kits using the SC14 suggest using the stock tune and a rising rate reg but its the dodgy way of doing it as ant said once the map sensor maxes out the spark stays there and does not vary compared to boost and the knock filter only filters knock upto 3600 rpm so after that it wont pull any timing anyway.ive got a few SC14 tunes here i dont know how they would go for passing emmissions though hows the emission test done mainly idle and 50 km/h cruise tested isnt it WOT doesnt factor into it at all im sure.you can get away with the 3psi without the tune but yes it will cost performance and no-one wants too stay at 3 psi ide slap the 10 psi pully and a cooler on straight away and tune it.even then you will want more later but you cant really get more from the SC14 after 10psi.

I'll research the emissions test requirements more thoroughly, had not looked at the details until now as I thought I would be stuck with standard tune and whatever result it gave before I stumbled across this site.

Thanks again to everyone for their assistance. You will be hearing from me.

Back already. Have installed TunerPro, down loaded .BIN and .xdf files for 808 and would appreciate info or link for explanation of the parameter names etc in the .xdf. Long way to go but a start.
