Re: Alternative Alternators ?
I don't have that
plus I have a solid mounted motor with steel mounts so theres no issues there lol!

No matter what the question is, the answer is always more horsepower!

Re: Alternative Alternators ?
so I got the new alternator wire in .... went from like 12 gauge or something to 4 gauge and with the motor idling, headlights on and thermo fans I have a lovely 14.15V at the battery in the boot! so im going to say that's a very suitable result ..... probably could get more by running the sense wire to the boot, but it can stay at the starter motor for .2v or so

No matter what the question is, the answer is always more horsepower!

Re: Alternative Alternators ?
yeah man im pretty happy
the big test will be late march at Gunnedah! but im fairly confident if it can maintain 14.15v at idle it will be fine with the second pump running on boost at revs!

No matter what the question is, the answer is always more horsepower!

Re: Alternative Alternators ?
Should be able to kill the alternator at launch like all the hotrodders did and still have enough juice for the run - add another 1.5KW to the flywheel....Holden202T wrote:yeah man im pretty happythe big test will be late march at Gunnedah! but im fairly confident if it can maintain 14.15v at idle it will be fine with the second pump running on boost at revs!

Re: Alternative Alternators ?
hahahahaha if that's an issue I will screw more boost into it
I only run 15-16 psi at Gunnedah as when I had 20psi at Sydney I went to fast for the safety gear I have, so I have slowed it down till I can resolve those issues, but at Gunnedah there's not as much traction, so far best of 7.23 so i will be tweaking it in the next outing with an aim to get a 7.0 (that's the limit!)
also if i was racing with 11volts, who knows, maybe full volts might give me better spark and gain HP

Re: Alternative Alternators ?
Awesome

Re: Alternative Alternators ?
if you have 85amp version best bet you are maxing out your idle current limit, it should say this on the alternator. They have 2 limits one below 2000rpm i think and the other above it.Holden202T wrote:so my Gemini is running a VR V6 alternator (85amp) and I believe I am getting to the limits of its capacity, so I wanted to throw the question out there .... does anyone know of a bolt in replacement that is 100-120amps or so ?
or is the stock one able to be upgraded to handle more .... I don't really know enough about this side of them to know what the options are....
i had this problem on the vx wagon, i put a 15/85 on as it's all i had spare, with dual thermo fans, A/C and High Beams going at idle it would max it out and voltage dropped below 10v and engine would stall, changed it to 40 /100 and the extra amps at idle was enough to keep it above 13volts.
Pre VS V6 Series 2 15 / 85
VS V6 Series 3 and up 40 / 100
i think there was a 35 / 85 & 35 / 90 somewhere in there to perhaps on V8's
Police packs got 60/120 amp Mitsubishi alternator.
I swapped both on my cars to the 40 / 100 just got used ones from wreckers and both run much better, if i had the cash id go the Mitsubishi one but i can't see it being any better 13volts with full load is still above the 12.4v of the battery.
