yes hpt has the virtual ve in 2.25.x

yes hpt will cost you more, they have very fine grained licensing which translates to you needing to buy more licenses to achieve the same as you could do with 1 on efilive. use google if you want to sus out the deal there, there are various threads about it on the hpt forums.

So, does this all mean that you need lotsa $ to tune, you can't do it with TunerPro or the free version of EfiLive?

Generally speaking, newer than LS1, yes. The time to develop the software (especially for those pcms where embedded code is sent to the pcm to drive it) is high enough that it mostly prevents the hobbyists from doing it and releasing it for free.

good luck getting a fair and honest comparison on the hpt forum, they can't stand criticism.

I wouldn't take the ford support as something to brag about, I talk to a few long term tuners on the east coast and they have all stopped using it for ford stuff because it doesn't get results or shit is plainly labelled wrong and they have informed hpt of this.

I have gripes with efilive too, but that is mainly table support on t43 trans controllers, but they are a much smaller team than hpt so development takes a little longer, but as a whole, the package is much better. standalone logging is superior with the efilive v2 hardware too, not to mention serial support for widebands which removes any voltage problems with analog signals.

Essential yeah to get all started.
Like Antus said, to tune an ECU, you need to develop your own custom code (Bootloader) which is executed in ram that allows reading/writing its memory. Bootloaders also cant just be copied, since they are all copyrighted :silent:
Literally dedicated teams need to be put onto reverse engineein ECUs and developing bootloaders, plus they need an unlimited supply of ecus or ability to recover bricked ones since no human is perfect, and mistakes in such a low level will result in problems.
Iv wanted to work on the LS2 ecus.. but the only one I have is the new VE SS.. so Im not to eager on breaking that.

From what I can see, each credit is $50usd .. and I would need two for my car (well you get a few freebies on purchase). But to tune my exact car.. thats $130aud!
Fair bit of money just to disable VATS or similar.
