Bolts are good for clamping but there's too much leeway in the bolt through holes of the flywheel to guarantee the flywheel can't walk back and forward between accell and engine braking. If it does that on a regualar basis it can chip away at the bolts. Dowels take care of rotational home position being fixed and bolts clamp. Cannot go wrong for such an easy implementation.
Drill a smaller pilot hole through the flywheel into the crank to create it all.
Oz38s guide is soemthign gm engineers would be proud of so totally worth joining the forum for. It's where i learned how to do the dowels years back

I could have a long discussion on this. Probably not best here though. I believe in the V6's case the dowels are added security being that they are not they smoothest engines, especially with manual transmissions.vlad01 wrote:to stop the flywheel moving really. dont see any other reason.
Not sure it really benefits as the humble VW use 4 dowels and 8 dowels is normal aftermarket setup and they come flying off or flogging out the dowels with 1/10th the power of boosted v6 all the time, problem they have is one huge central bolt rather than smaller ones around the perimeter which clearly works better.
When the later, T4 engine came out they ran 5 small bolts no dowels and they never ever had issues despite 2-3 times the torque of the beetle engine.
So I don't see 2 little dowels doing much to be honest.
Cheers

Yeah its wuiet sizable and should wake the v6 up quiet alloy with the boost this things going to see
I tried to make an acount to read that how to and it wouldn't let me with either of my emails so ill just do the best i can with it what size dowls should i use and where do you get them from i had a look at the flywheel and it does have holes for them so i might as well use them i dont want to give this thing any reason to fall appart also the holes arent blocked off as in there right throught the flywheel what holds them in the interference in the crank ?

I'd say most engine machine shops should be able to sell you dowels.

Re: my ride vt ecotec
ok cool however im starting to question the need for my effort to do this contemplating using some arp studs or bolts in sted this thing ran fine the way it was with 300hp to the tyres and this flywheel and cutch setup is only going to be temporary anyway i will be converting to a t56 at a later date with some ppg gear and dog synchro sets anyway so im not sure its worth my effort cheers
