Best bin for a 5L v8

Post by djbrooksy »

Hi gents
What would the best bin to drop into a 5L v8
808 ecu? At the moment it's got The ASBX bin

Motor has the normal mods exhaust and extractors and crap
Now has a manual box and sits in the bay of a vl

you would be better off with a HSV based bin with the knock sensor turned off, given the extractors change the fuel map slightly. the HSV tune will be closer.

They can also take a bit more timing with good fuel. Good gains can be had from stock tunes.
The 185 tune is a better start as Jayme said. Got a wideband?

Yes I do have a wide band o2 setup
But the car is not mine. And the guy the owns it is just a work mate I don't to be spending hours squeezing every bit out of it I can.

Can I ask why turn the knock sensor off? Is it not compatible or does it do more hurt then good

because only HSV have a knock sensor, so if you use a HSV tune it will fault unless you fit one
According to chemistry, alcohol is a solution...

and usually when it has no knock board or knock sensor but its enabled in the tune it will retard the timing 10 degrees!

So one last question
Are the HSV tunes safe to run without a knock sensor?
Is the timing in the range of premium only

And even then are they likely to ping their heads off

yes its safe. even HSV runs pretty safe timing. I wouldnt be running 91 octane in anything...... if you do that you deserve a ping  (but it wont ping even on 91 lol)

you should also put into diag mode and check the base timing..... ive seen soooo many 304's at 6 deg instead of 10 where they shoudl be. 4 deg costs a lot of power.

Looks like it's all systems go then

Timing is OK that was checked when he first got the car
As for go juice his car his problem I just didn't want to be responsible for a tune that kills it

Thanks for the info guys and teaching me a few new things
