Swapped the dizzy wires around and it wouldn't run so pretty sure the polarity is right.

At least it runs I suppose

Just thinking from a different perspective, should I keep increasing the reference angle until both timings, diagnostic mode and ECU, align at 10 degrees. Saying that it misses at 10 degrees, it seems to like tdc. However When it's running on the MSD it loves 10 degrees.

Ive got no experience on this part. But the idea popped into my head a while ago. Just throw different numbers at it untill it lines up. Could soon work out what way you need to go then dial it in.

get that right first and lock it at 10 deg and do not move your dizzy from there. then connect ecu and check timing again in diag mode. if its moved from 10 degrees then your reference angle is wrong. .

I did it this way and it worked, it stayed at 10 degrees, but as soon as out of diagnostic mode it wouldn't start due to being massively retarded. Chees

Just realised I am contradicting yesterday's reply re the same post but I wasn't quite doing as above

Did a bit of googling and now understand that by enabling diagnostic mode you are disabling the spark advance from the ECU. The same as blocking off the vacuum on a vacuum advance dizzy to set the true timing. So the reference angle is set correctly, 10 degrees ECU unplugged and 10 degrees in diagnostic mode, the problem lies with the fact that the ECU is retarding the advance. Could this is be due to none of the sensors being installed and the ECU compensating for some false input.

What is he ecu commanding? Post a log up.

Hopefully someone can confirm this.

In diagnostic mode the ecu is put into module mode for timing.
The ecu has no control of the timing. Practically the same as cranking with the ecu unplugged.
So the reference angle has no effect in diagnostic mode.

not correct. in diagnostic mode, the ecu is controlling the timing, but it is commanding 10 degrees no matter what (until revs go over 2000 rpm, then it drops back to the normal spark map) . only time the module controls timing without the ecu is during crank.

so heff, you are saying now that with ecu unplugged its 10 degrees, and with the ecu plugged in, in diagnostic mode, its still 10 deg, but when you remove the diagnostic wire, it retards?

Yes that's correct Jayme. I reported differently in my earlier post as I was a bit confused
