265 Hemi to efi
Re: 265 Hemi to efi
It's a later model 55 amp alternator and I checked the alternator size for a JE camira and that is also 55 amp and I am not running thermo fans yet.
You can install up to around 80 amp internals in the same case but the problem is that the stock valiant wiring runs the wire from the alt to the battery through the dash ammeter and the wiring can overheat even with the larger 55 Amp alternators. I have seen this first hand as the original dash loom I had with the car had a whole heap of molten wires surrounding the alt/battery wire.

Re: 265 Hemi to efi
i'd firstly try running a wire from the alternator directly to the positive battery terminal and see if that improves things..... assuming you get 13.5v at the alternator lug, then if your not seeing 13.5v or so at the battery at idle then i would suggest something is very wrong!
No matter what the question is, the answer is always more horsepower!

Yes that's the problem. alt puts out 13.9 v but wire into battery is only 12.8, which was the same voltage as the battery so I reckon whole system is running off the battery
Re: 265 Hemi to efi
Ran a new cable direct from the alt to the battery and all problems solved so there must be a break or bad connection in the original loom wiring.
Dylans bin ran pretty well and I here is a log file to show the results. cheers

Re: 265 Hemi to efi
you'll probably also find that with all the extra EFI stuff your asking too much of the original charge wiring!
just make sure you have a suitably sized wire to carry the needed amps to the battery and you should no longer have issues!
i've been through these things with my race car, it wasn't so much dodgy or old wiring, it was more i was asking for up to 70amps at full noise and the wire to the alternator / battery was not rated for it!

Re: 265 Hemi to efi
Yep, poor wiring is the problem. The VH valiants have a terrible wiring setup which was changed in the following models. The loom has three spade connections plus the gauge between alternator and battery. They were corroded and I was able to clean the male ends easy but the female spade bits are a real pain to clean. I have recovered about 3 volts on my first clean but there are still about 7 volts to go. I will just stick with my direct wire for now as it works.
Re: 265 Hemi to efi
Great news, I required my HQ with bigger wiring as I'm running VN 85 amp alternator, no dramas now ! Most 70's cars were built on the cheap and the wiring definatly dosnt meet today's standards. Chuck in a half decent stereo and halogen headlights and there at the limit. Now go and have some fun tuning it and then when the wide band arrives you'll have a ball !

I had a car and when I looked at the alternator it was only 25 amps. So much for any accessories. 80 amp is now small with many cars well over the 100 amps now.
