Hi guys,
Ok, the story is for the last 25 odd years I've been exclusively into bikes. A couple of years ago I bought a 4Runner and the Toyota V6 finally died. So I've decided on a V6 commodore swap using the Toyota manual box & transfer case (manual hubs so no smoke & mirrors for 4wd selection).
Anyways what I would like to know what would be the best engine\ECU combination. Ecotec or non Ecotec. Various suppliers are offering ways around this, but $345 odd dollars seems a bit high for reprogramming to remove security, I can understand if it included a tune, development costs & such.
I've got some electrical\electronics experience (was a electronics tech for a few years) so that side shouldn't be too difficult.
Long term goal is to have a setup where I could tune the old girl, getting setup with the required hard\software.
From reading the 4Runner manual I can get a 4 pulse per rev signal from the speedo cluster (haven't determined whether I'd need an interface to the holden ECU to condition the signal). After going thru the FAQ here I've worked out a pulse rate of 7110 PPK with my diff ratio & tyre selection which would be 1422 PPK after the divide by five.
What's the go with removing security on the various setups & reprogramming an auto ECU for a manual, last car I messed around with was a LX when I was 17 or 18.

don't pay $345 for that shit, there will be someone here that can either do all this for you for a lot less, or if you want to do it yourself this is the right place to find all the answers.
either of the motors you suggest can be manual config no worries, just depends which you want as to what you need to change.

I can't comment on the pros and cons of the Ecotec, but if you're looking for a straight forward swap with the option of tuning it yourself in the future it's hard to go past a pre ecotec v6 with an '808 ECU running the OSE12P code.
You can start out with a stock tune with VATS disabled, then later add data logging and/or realtime hardware to the ECU if you decide.
The 808s are a MAP system, and if you're dropping a standard engine in then you shouldn't have to touch the tune to get it running.
The VSS input isn't essential, but it does help. Plenty of conversions don't include a VSS input to the ECU.
