If your paying the $$$ to buy the car it's easy to talk him out of it, if he is show him how much they cost to fix, for a laugh go to a dealer and tell them you have what he wants as a trade in, when they offer sfa hopefuly he'l get the picture. On a side has anyone seen the replacement cost of a new windscreen on the latest subaru's ? They have some collision warning shit or something beside interior rear view mirror and if you smash a screen it's about 4gtand to replace as you have to get specialists in or dealer to recalibrate the sensors, can see a few cheap subaru's in 5 or so years "just needs windscreen for rwc" lmfao

Ive got an 06 blitzen with 2nd gen ez30 and love it. Tuning is with rom raider, flashing is with ecuflash and a tactrix cable. Ecu is pretty basic but improvements can be made.

Looking at the list here, it might only be the 4th gen car (2nd gen) ez30 thats supported, though (04-07). For reference the OS in the 06 blitzen EZ30 MT is D0XJ001M.

I previouly had a 3rd gen with the 2.5 and that engine did have the typical head gasket problems of the 3rd gen 2.5s. It didnt need to be upgraded to mls but did need replacing. Probably most of them have been done by now, though. The EZ30 1st gen did not have the gasket problem (that I am aware of). If its a manual some have a double flywheel clutch which is super expensive to replace when the time comes. When i needed to do the clutch in mine i converted it back to standard clutch.

Fun fact - at that time (1999 to 2006) GM owned a 20.4% stake in fuji heavy industries (subaru).

The 3rd gen cars use a 5v ttl serial link and im pretty sure can can also be logged with rom raider. Avoid ecutek for subaru flashing which seems to be a closed, locked, expensive version of the free stuff upon which it is based.

All in all Im big on subaru but if your son can get some extra cash together i'd say get a 4th gen. Its a better car.

It actually looks like a very tidy car, seems to have been looked after but doesn't have a full service history. It's also a Japanese import which I'm always a bit dubious about.....

The ones around my area don't like the roll bars and links .Chassis mount for roll bars crack and the links break often (probably ok on bitumen but not dirt road ).
If you strengthen the chassis rail mounts the wishbone mount breaks,strengthen the wishbone mount the link breaks ,get a better link the sway bar end cracks , get after market sway bar back to strengthen chasis mount. For dirt road remove them.

Antus is on the money. The Tactraix cable and ECUflash for the read write. Also check out Evoscan website for bin files. I have been playing with Mitsubishi EVO for a few years now and it's great with the above combo. I believe the Subaru ECU is easy to brick if the voltage wavers during writing and not many people car resurrect them after the episode. That said many people have been tuning them for a long time now. My mate with an STI won't let me even download his bin file just to have a look what's in it.

gahh! they are using bare fingers on the ARP rod bolts!

ARP even say don't touch them as the salts/acids on your fingers can easily induce hydrogen embrittlement. The alloy used is sensitive to it.
