Fuel tank
Fuel tank
Ok, while I have the tank out of the Q and fitting an intank pump to it I'm going to change the tank vent set up as well. I'l be running a new line to the front of car so I can run a charcoal cannister so it dosnt just vent to the atmosphere as it does standard. While doing this I want to put a roll over/ breather valve in as well to make it safer, has anyone got any ideas from what car I can get one of these off at pick a part or wreckers that suits 5/16-8mm line ? Cheers

Re: Fuel tank
the whole idea of the charcoal canister is to catch all the stuff that comes from the tank and suck it into the engine and not vent it to atmosphere .... so i'd say its not needed.
No matter what the question is, the answer is always more horsepower!

Re: Fuel tank
Correct, it's to suck the vapors not fluid though. I know Quite a few cars run the stock so I figured it couldn't hurt (not that I plan on rolling it) might just run a one way check valve with spring removed as that's all they are anyway and then i'l adapt it to suit

Re: Fuel tank
The charcoal actually condenses the vapor into a sort of absorbed liquid state which is stored in the massive surface area of the charcoal (inside and out of the molecular structure of the carbon), allowing the engine to consume it as "needed". That is done via a purge outlet which is open by a vacuum operated valve at light throttle/high vac situations, on in case of VS and onward PCM controlled solenoid.
On the canister there is an atmosphere vent in which the pressurized vapor from the tank is first purified and absorbed via the carbon and then let into the atmosphere as clean air, this vent also allows the "draw through" action when the purge is active. So the engine sucks air through this vent and takes the stored fuel with it.
Its well worth having on any conversion, it just deals with so many little issues all in one.

I'm the director of VSH (Vlad's Spec Holden), because HSV were doing it ass about.

Re: Fuel tank
What in tank system you planning ?
I picked up a Q tank today. It has a rear mount sump & x2 8an ports at the back.

I'l b running a ba falcon mra with upgraded pump. Will be taking pics and adding them as I go as there's very little info on doing this swap on a HQ. Hopefuly get started on it in 2 weeks

Re: Fuel tank
when i did the ecotec into the torana i had to fit an unleaded filler neck, it had all the ports on it to connect the toranas wheel arch breakers into it then connect it all to the charcoal canister so might be a suitable option?

When was this? Just asking cause I don't see a valid need anymore to fit an unleaded filler neck when leaded is no longer available at service stations.Holden202T wrote:when i did the ecotec into the torana i had to fit an unleaded filler neck,

Re: Fuel tank
i argued that too bit that was the engineering requirement, mind you it gave me the right filling neck with all the attachments i needed so was a pretty easy conversion.
cut the top of the original tank filler, added a shortened commodore one and it fit perfectly behind the fuel flap number plate!

Re: Fuel tank
202,
I guess you had a external pump with the rana tank ?
HQ355.
A HX tank has all the extra tails for the breathers & charcoal tank. 1 Vent on the pass side goes up into the wheel arch. Drivers has same, + charcoal tale + another 1/4 breather from memory.
As for inline check valve, look at ford/mazda e2000. They have inline 1 ways for the brake booster.
