can only fit one tune onto the ecotec memcal .... having said that you could make some funky board to allow more than one on it and a switch to change between them .... would be a bit of a mission though.

thing is unless your planning to run different fuels theres not much point in having multiple tunes and switching ....

the power and economy parts of the maps are at different ends to each other so you can have it all in the one tune provided its all to suit one fuel type.

That is all controlled by the right foot :driving:

if you are happy to put 98 octane fuel in the car then you can fairly easily bump the timing up to get more go out of the ecotec, but in my experience you can't go much more than stock on 91 without knocking!

i've also had some experience with tweaking the tranny a bit and you can get it shifting quicker and holding gears longer etc if you so desire .... in the trannys case you can have a mad scientist button in the power/econ button .... basically adjust trans parameters for the power mode and leave econ as it is etc it allows you to have a beast gearbox setup but still have a "sunday drive" setting for the grandparents!
Cheers for the info, the idea behide it is soon as we get onto the highway i would like to be able to cut the fuel down again (more economy from economy mode) as i do alot of highway driving that does require much pedal if im not using cruise control. But still have the option, when needed, to give it a boot to overtake someone. I have been comparing your tune you posted in "Delco_probe" thread in the off topic section to get more of an idea. I dont think i described my theory to well as i was getting side tracked. But i should also state that nothing but 98 or higher goes into my tank. Well except for last night when the servo didnt have any and used $20 of that ethanol stuff.

The idea i have floating around my head is like a a 3rd option to economy mode and power mode. Pretty much when not in power mode, im in economy mode but then once i get onto the high way a 3rd button say tones down the fuel even more to beat the 7L per 100km mark. As i dont want to have to drive around town in power mode or such to get a good kick as the stock eco mode does that fine.

About the car: Its a 96 Holden VS Commodore Series 2. Engine mods are only a cold air intake for now but later on ill be putting a rebuild kit through it with ACL flat tops. Its a IRS with open 3.08 gears but later will be a LSD with 3.08. It also has the stock extractors, unsure about the cat but cat back is a Lucky 2.5" exhaust system with 1 muffler.

Eco mode produces around 7L to 8L per 100km on a highway sitting on anywhere from 110km/h to 130km/h which it steal remains on cold, sometimes below cold. However its the cities that destroy the freezing engine. Itll jump up to half way at times whilst driving in heavy traffic. Which i understand as im guess the car hates the city as much as i do.

I hope all that makes since as once i start typing i dont think about what i type.
Thanks so much for all your input as well.

The VS bins allready have lean cruise mode, where after a bunch of paramaters are met, temperature & speed, then it allready leans out the engine for the reasons you describe. I wonder how much further you could lean it out? What you really want to be tweaking if you decide there is more in it, would be the lean cruise settings. However, we need to find them in the VS bins for that to be an option.

the reason they get hot in traffic is the thermo fan is set to come on at a pretty high temp (half way up the guage) you can set it lower in the tune, then its all good :)

I doubt you are going to get any better fuel economy than what you have at the moment! there is still no point to the extra switch, you want power, you tune WOT you want economy, you tune part thorttle. both are seprate parts of the tune.

Oh i see, im starting to slowly get the picture. But i dont want to tune the eco and power mods as im pretty happy with them now, i just thought (mad idea came to me one day) i could tune the memcal to when i flick a switch its leaner in cruise mod. Where as i just learnt that if i tune cruise mod to lean it more could help with fuel eco but also when i need to boot it i still have all the power there. Ill start doing some research into what i can and cant do with the cruise mod options. Cheers for all your help.

yeah when you boot it, it switches to a different part of the fuel map anyway so it wont matter. the existing economy and power modes dont do anythign other than move the shift points for the transmission.

Oh ok, i noticed in the tune im comparing with the stock all the transmissions were changed. So far i have found the Lean cruise mode is set on but yet to discover where the ratios are stored and the best way to tune. Google is producing some very good information and oddly enough im actually enjoying learning about all this.

i think from memory the only things i have defined in the $51 xdf is lean cruise enable settings, eg. temp and so forth .... one of these which may give it a freckle more economy is the time after you start moving till when it enables lean cruise, i think its like 150 seconds normally so basically if you are out in the sticks on 100km roads and have to come to an intersection and then take off again, 10-20 seconds after that your at cruise again but theres another 130 seconds before lean cruise kicks in ... so you can change that.

theres also some settings in there for what temperature it starts working at, but they probably don't really need changing either.

as far as lean cruise changes are concerned, we do need to find them and add them to the xdf, but i dare say you wont be able to add much more too them without it adversly effecting the engine .... if the setting is too much then you feel a jolt when it enables and a surge when it disables, but you can only try i suppose.... there is also heat issues, if its too lean and from my experience at my mates engine shop they get alot of ecotec heads coming through cracked between the valves!

as for the fan, its a catch 22 .... you make it come on earlier, theres more engine load and you use more fuel! having said that, i have changed my fan setting because i prefer it to come on before the engine gets to 100 degrees (94 i think its at) .... the other thing is to a point the hotter the engine runs the better it goes and will get better economy .... obviously over this point you start going backwards .....

as far as the cruise mode options you have things like up/downshift points , also line pressure (how soft/firm these shifts etc) so there is a bit you can play with .... i know from my dads VS the cruise shifting on hills leaves a bit to be desired, just seems to chop and change gears too much....

One again thank you for your helpful info. I think my best option would be to play around in an old shitter to test these settings.
Just on last question what are the chances of being able to find a complete xdf file or attempting to decrypt it myself?
Iv been looking on google for a complete one, how to use tunerpro and ecotec related topics to do with delco modifying.
Theres been alot of talk about not finding a complete xdf file for the ecotec and all links for download of any mentioned ones are linked to here. Thanks for all your help.
