this has been done on f1 engines but interesting to see in road car wonder how long before it is standard kit

Re: koenigsegg camless engine
not a new idea, problems in the past have been with the actuators and finding ones that are quick enough and still be reliable.

Re: koenigsegg camless engine
Koenigsegg have been testing there system on a production vehicle for a couple of years now so I would imagine they are on top of the reliability issues.

Another video on the subject .. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3cFfM3r510
I wasn't aware any F1 engine had a cam-less setup though. The regulations have prevented it, certainly in the last decade or so that I can remember, but would really like to see it happen. It would be more relevant now in the hybrid era with technology that has filtered down to production vehicles seeing as it is a fuel limited series. In all recent F1 engines they use a pneumatic valve 'spring'. Some REALLY nice pictures here .. http://www.f1technical.net/forum/viewto ... =4&t=24821.

Re: koenigsegg camless engine
that valve spring setup probably costs as much as my whole motor
No matter what the question is, the answer is always more horsepower!

Re: koenigsegg camless engine
watched that new video... some really cool stuff there. no throttle required... the valve is the throttle. though at a guess, they must use a MAF now, because they have no plenum under vacuum to use a map sensor.
no wastegate, because for each cylinder, one valve goes to atmo, the other valve goes to turbo. lots of follow on effects come from being able to control valves directly and via computer.... as if these new ecu's werent complicated enough controlling fuel, spark, cam timing etc. now they control the valves too, and all of the other follow on effects from being able to do that. soon you will need a degree just to tune these things!

Re: koenigsegg camless engine
I had always heard about this technology but was never able to find any info on it, I read the article with the photos and am in awe...
Makes perfect sense, the cam is the brain of the engine, albeit not very smart, take away the limiting factor and voila, an engine that suits a waaayy broader range of use. Achievable fuel economy must be insane.
