90% of the control is behind the control panel.
this one.

so i took the VX HVAC motor apart.
u have to get the fan 'blade' off, hold the fan and use a hammer to punch the shaft out. note the shaft is a D type so the fan blade thingo only goes on one way.
Image

on the back there are two nuts, they come off easily enough. remove the angled bolt portion and put them aside.

pull the back off to expose the innards of the motor. nothing will fly out.

lever the connector assembly thing up a little, just to free it, then, pull the board with the brushes attached to it out. dont mind the rubber tube in the middle, will explain that later.
Image

have a look at the board and the brushes
Image

from here if you so feel inclined you can remove the inner winding if you want, for a look. i did because it is cool and wanted to show my son.

said insides

i THINK this thing is where the problem is. this seemed to be stuck. so i used my scalpel and freed it up. not sure why this exists in there, not a elec motor winding expert. VSH any idea? it sits on the circuit board on the back of where the brushes attach to.
Image

check the brushes and where they run on the centre bit of the motor. clean the shaft.
this motor does not have bearings. it has bronze bushes in it. check them and make sure the motor rotates on them AOK.
check that contact thing that looks like a contact set/old school points, clean it with a scalpel/some 200 wet/dry.

clean it all up, put back together.
put the core back in thru the magnets. patience. is fun :)

to get the PCB / board thing with the brushes back on, cut a bit of 5/8 heater hose about 1" long. feed that thru the centre of that PCB to hold the brushes apart. remove the spacers/washer off the back of the shaft, maneuver the whole shebang onto the motor, taking note of the orientation of the plug and the rubber things that hold that board either side. slowly guide it on so the brushes sit on the shaft OK

Image

put the back of the motor on, two nuts and angled bolts.

put the fan blade thingo on. note the washer at the bottom of the shaft to stop the flaming fan from going down too far. watch for that. oh also make sure the orientation of the mount (that holds the fan to the HVAC box) is right too and not in the way.

once all back together, test.

hope this helps someone out.
Cheers,
Greg aka Sir Burnie Tanington

Interesting...

The fan in the missus Calais has what sounds like a noisy bearing except it doesn't have one if it's bushed only......

It Is an over heat/load cut out ,set of points with bimetalic spring, heats up points go open,

That noise, believe it or not is usually caused by dirt and dust on the blades

Also know as a circuit breaker, it is usually the cause of the fan stopping, the reason why the fan has been drawing enough current to chatter and burn out the contacts is often caused by an airflow blockage, the evaporator is a common part to block up...

yeah.
the thing was filthy - even INSIDE the motor ; theres holes at the top of the motor housing which help cool it ; but ; also drag in crud. there was insulation fluff and dirt in the guts of mine.
airflow blockage, the evaporator is a common part to block up...
yeah, you'd be on the money there big G. never knew. theres a thread on JC http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/thr ... sh.209935/ and that dudes evap is completely clagged. he drilled a hole in the HVAC to get to it but I don't reckon that would be enough, would be a HVAC out job to do properly.
