Hey Charles.

I taught High School and Primary School in NW NSW. I had health issues that forced me onto the pension. The local TAFE approached me and said if I got a Cert 4 TAA they'd employ me to teach auto, I said I am 1 unit off finishing my masters in teaching isn't that enough, their reply was no so the negotiations stopped there. They can't get enough people to teach apprentices at TAFE yet they have these stupid rules that force people who already have teaching qualifications 1 or 2 levels over what they require as a baseline to do the baseline qualification anyway. Anyway I had debts to pay so I went back to work as a mechanic, my boss and I had a "disagreement" and he dared me to quit so I did. I went back teaching Primary School as a casual and had another health scare about 18 months ago. Now I'm doing TAFE courses in IT. Hopefully when my place sells I can get into IT down in the Hunter region.

I've got to admit your name has a familiar ring to it. You weren't at Blacktown TAFE in 1985 were you?

I taught Sydney 81/82 Wetherill Park 83/84 then Padstow just up the road for the rest of my time. I know what your saying about all the BS with qualls. We all had teaching diploma's and had been teaching for over 20 years when they bought in this Certificate 4 BS and we all had to go back and do modules on things like lesson prep and exam writing etc. Total BS. The teacher they used was a pimply young guy with a Cert 4. Got so fed up with it all and as soon as I get to the 60 quit 2 days after and haven't looked back. I do miss the access to some of the equipment they had.

Exactly right Charles.

In 1984 I went to a TAFE, can't remember what one, that had a day for HS students to see if they would be interested in automechanics. I was living near Blacktown at the time and going to school in the inner west of Sydney. It was a week or so after the Milperra Massacre. We drove from Blacktown through Milperra and then to the TAFE which was a short distance away. I never really knew my way around SW Sydney and I can't remember what TAFE it was.

I had alot more typed up about TAFE and the rules regarding working in the system but it was looking like a whinge. Needless to say until they fix up the bureaucratic mess they created they will find it hard to get or retain teachers at any level (schools, TAFE, uni).

That would have been Padstow. I might have just got there back then. Yea the bureaucracy is a total pain. I couldn't believe the continual work place assessment that went on.
They don't want teachers. It's all changed they want assessors and teachers so they can pay less money. Anyway they are getting rid of teachers because they don't have anywhere as many students.

same up here in QLD, alot of techs get put on as Admin but do tech work, due to silly rules about tech roles needing minimum of batch or dip's. Experience means nothing over a piece of paper for Gov.

That's interesting Charles, we may have met.

Nigel that doesn't surprise me. People who are good at brain dumps but have no experience get a job yet people with a proven track record get overlooked. That's why I want the practical experience as well as the certifications.

I think this is true in most places, book smart seems to win out with HR types but those with real world experience are the ones doing the quality work where it matters.

Soon you will need a PH.d to change a light bulb.....

LOL.
With the way the power situation is in Australia I certainly hope not. Need power to get light bulbs to work. We had an entire state (South Australia) lose power not so long ago and on Friday they told NSW they might have to shut down parts of the network so we didn't overload it with aircon. We are in a heatwave and they tell us we need to conserve energy cause they can't build a system that can supply the state and also has no redundancy built in.

Didn't Auckland or Wellington have a complete power out for about a week a few years ago?

The moral to this is instead of paying monkeys millions to build systems that aren't capable they should be paid what they are worth and the people who actually can do stuff should be the ones getting paid well.

I love how the Off Topic section goes off topic

Yes, we had a huge cut many years ago in the central city. The problem was the old infrastructure, one cable failed, then the next cable failed with the extra load so on and so forth. Basically the CBD was without power for a fair while. They ended up laying temporary cables from the sub-station into the city using the rail network I believe.

We also have little redundancy in our system, although we're about 80%+ renewable it's not fool proof as a dry summer can cause havoc with the hydro power stations and they are closing down coal/oil/gas fired power stations etc.

Yep, some young punk with a very expensive book education probably makes these decisions whilst the guys with the experience get laid off......

I'm considering installing solar power system as the cost of power is rising rapidly since the government de-regulated the system as well as partial privatization.....
