I should add, same error a few days apart.
Tried burning with my laptop & desktop, same error.
There are no broken pins.
Burner is writing to memcals no issues.
I had a similar intermittent problem, found that when I mounted the chip in the GQ4x programmer, if I gave it a slight push in either sideway directions, it seemed to connect to all the slotted connections below the slotted plastic on top, seems the plastic separating the slots on the programmer was slightly overhanging the flat movable connections under the top, I eventually pulled it apart and clearanced the black slotted plastic above the slotted connections, with a dremmel using a skinny burr.
Not saying it's definitely your problem though, something to check I guess.
I kept thinking that I'd had a bunch of dying chips.
Also some low quality usb cables cant provide enough power the GQ for it to work properly. Try another USB cable. Though you did say its writing memcals no problems, which probably requires more power than an NVRAM. Doesnt sound promising. Did he put it in a programmer upside down? Ive seen that do damage when the power goes to the wrong pins.
