Were they detuned from the factory or under quoted the actual power?

The factory tune has 28° @ WOT which is the most timing of any Holden 304 tune I've seen.

Anyone know of a super grippy tyre that comes in 225/60R15 size?

Was looking at hoosier but they only have 55 ratio in that size which is too small profile. Did see that size listed on some tyre sites for the Perelli brand.

I dont know which makes of tyres are good these days except for high end bridgestones. All other brands outside of the good bridgestone skate like ice from my experience.

Between the timing curve and even the VE and AE I'd say theres more than 215kw in them. I've delt with some very similair combos and started with that tune and they've been not even close. Considering the intake can and heads they run.

Tiny cam too, I bet that engine would sing with a decent cam and tune to suit.

Unfortunately if you want decent tyres you have to go larger diameter these days. If it were me I'd be getting a set of 17s for the performance rubber and keeping a set of original 15s for the days you want it to look original.

If you really must stick with the 15s all the time the best bet is probably scouring eBay etc for a not-too-old second hand set of Bridgestones. If you can find them the price should be OK, but still not going to be a proper performance tyre

Found kumho make a pretty well rated tyre in that size, W rated which is 270km/h. hardly any tyres are rated that unless they are serious tyres.

I won't be getting 17", they look horrific on VPs, even my 17s on the VR dont look right but it was less of a concern on that car as VR are of a newer style body and I was keen to see how low profile wheels performed

The problem I have found with larger wheels is the inability to conform to rutted country roads (ie. all roads in Vic) so traction is compromised, especially on corners. The VR skips over the irregularities of the road surface simply because the low profile just doesn't mould rather sits rigidly over the high points. Steering is also weird with low profile. It grips great like shit to a blanket but lacks the grippy feeling if you know what I mean.

Having several rides in HQ's car that has 14" wheels that are 245 or something along those lines with fat profile, feels fantastic on the corners.

Yeah it all depends on what you're after, 15s would be the nicest ride but you just don't have the option of a decent performance tyre. I had to go 17s on the Torana in the end to get a good tyre on it, but I did keep the profile reasonable so that there was still some sidewall. You may find that you need different alignment settings for lower profile tyres due to the stiffer sidewall, and if you go the wrong offset or too wide the Commodores tend to react very badly to an increase in scrub radius - this is where the HQ will shine in comparison, much more stable and forgiving.

Put some high quality shocks with decent rebound damping in it to help with traction on the bad roads, it won't ride much better but it will help stop it being so skittish and bouncing in the corners. You're right you definitely want higher profile tyres to help with the ride here.

Just been through this, the tyres are out there just nobody stocks them anymore...TA radials look nice but have been known to be crap in the wet(may have changed these days)
Kumho's are pretty good for the price...anyway ended up going Nankang, my brother supply's and fits tyres from home and after he checked all his contacts these ended up being the best in my price range(no way Im sticking a grands worth of tyres on :) )They are not bad for the price 95$ each fitted, then again Im an old fart and only occasionally fang it up in the adleaide hills

Perhaps not any good for anyone now, but I did find a website ages ago that had pretty much every tyre on it listed, along with traction and tread wear ratings. The site seems to have disappeared now though.
You could pretty much search for any tyre by size, wear or traction rating etc and then compare it against other tyres.
Anyway this was the link http://www.iseecars.com/tire-ratings
